Butler football gets first round district win tonight in Sherwood

The Butler Bears football team traveled to take on the Sherwood Marksmen tonight in the first round of district high school football.

Butler would lead the contest at halftime by a score of 16-6 after holding Sherwood out of the end zone from the 6 yard line to end the half.

Sherwood would get the ball to start the 2nd half however they would lose the ball on a fumble recovered by Sophomore Chris Castro deep in their own territory. Butler would capitalize with a 6 yard rushing touchdown by Junior QB Kellen Long pushing the lead to 22-6 Butler.

Butler would cruise to a 42-6 win over Sherwood and they will move to 6-4 on the season. Sherwood will finish the season with a record of 5-5. The bears will now hit the road again and move on to play the Pembroke Hill Raiders (9-0) next Friday.

Ballard JH Boys Basketball Wins First in GVVC Tournament

The Ballard Junior High Boys Basketball Team won 1st place at the GVVC tournament. They won against NEVC. Congratulations to the Bulldogs!!

 

Byrd's Pecan Festival Cancelled

Unfortunately with the forecast of possible showers all day and so many backing out (which is totally understandable especially when you have a small business and don't want things ruined) we have decided to cancel this year's festival. rescheduling was originally the plan but it looks like the future forecast also is not in our favor.

Funeral services for Betty Jenkins of Lyndon, Kansas formerly of Butler, Missouri will be 2 p.m. Friday, November 1, 2024 at Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. Betty Lou Jenkins, age 93 of Lyndon, Kansas formerly of Butler, Missouri died Monday, October 28, 2024 at Advent Health in Ottawa, Kansas. She was the oldest child of Albert Bryan and Jessie Otis Heckadon Lacy, born February 28, 1931 in a farm house in Mound Township.

Betty lived with her family northeast of Passaic, Missouri, then in Passaic and on a farm south of Passaic. She and her sister walked to Passaic to school, either down Highway 71 or the railroad tracks. One evening when Betty and Fay were walking down the highway, they saw red flames coming from the roof of their home. They then moved to a farm east of Crescent Hill where she and her sisters attended school. Betty graduated from the 8th grade and attended Adrian High School

Betty worked as a waitress and grocery store clerk. She met Glen Jenkins and were married May 16, 1948 after she finished her Junior year of high school. They lived in Adrian a short time then moved to a farm in Mound Township and started a family, Kelly Glen, Sheila Marie and Kerry Dee. The family moved to the Ray farm up north in Deer Creek Township, then purchased the farm where they lived until her health declined.

Betty worked at MFA, Bass Busters in Amsterdam and then was the fee agent for Bates County License Bureau. In November 1981, she was elected the first Bates County Assessor on the Democratic ticket and served until September 1, 1997. Betty retired to be a full time housewife and grandmother which she was the best. Betty and Glen loved to travel. They have been to the 48 original states with their children and the Canadian Providences that border the United States. Later they traveled to Old Mexico and many trips to Branson, Missouri, always driving and never flying. Betty loved her family very much and enjoyed cooking Sunday dinner every week and then once a month. She spent her time watching The View and Dancing with the Stars, reading, doing puzzles and playing games on the computer.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Sheila Tumbleson of Ottawa, Kansas; a son, Kerry Jenkins and wife Julie of Panama City Beach, Florida; four grandchildren, Betty, Kelly, Tisha and Bobby; five siblings, Fay O’Riley of Adrian, Missouri, Alpha Courson of Coalgate, Oklahoma, June Talley, Bryan Lacy Jr and wife Judy and Bonnie Gillis all of Adrian, Missouri; and nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen Oren Jenkins on October 19, 2011; and a son, Kelly Glen Jenkins in 1960.

State Farm Student Athlete of the week Butler Junior Kellen Long

We are happy to announce this week’s State Farm student athlete of the week, Junior, Kellen Long from Butler. Kellen is the quarterback and plays safety for the Butler Bears. He also is a part of the wrestling team. He was nominated by Head Coach Gregg Webb after last weeks game against El Dorado. They won 42-0 and Kellen had 40 yards rushing on 7 carries and 2 touchdowns.

He was also 3 for 6 passing for 72 years. Lastly, he had 12 tackles, 2 forced turnovers, and a 60 yard punt return. We asked Kellen what he feels the most difficult part of being a student athlete today is and he said, “staying on top of your grades.

Also staying positive and keeping a good mindset, you can’t get lazy.” We asked him what his favorite sports memory was. He stated, “being able to play with the seniors my sophomore year. I had been out the entire year with an injury so getting to play a game with them was special.” Then we asked how he stays motivated to continue to get better. He explained, “anytime I lose, I know there is room for improvement. It motivates me to continue to do better to not lose again and just improve overall.” Finally, we asked Kellen what advise he has for younger people wanting to start sports. He replied, “start off slow and see how you feel. If you like it then continue to devote your time and energy to it. Set limits and attainable goals. 

Then you can build on that.” It was a pleasure speaking with Kellen and we wish him and the Butler Bears the best of luck tonight as they travel to Sherwood for their district matchup.

Russell Dean Allen, age 86 of Butler, Missouri died Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at his home. He was born June 18, 1938 to Russell George and Blanch Barton Allen in Bates County, Missouri.

Dean is survived by two daughters, Cindy Catron and husband David of Butler, Missouri and Vicki Embrey and significant other David Bough of Nevada, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Kenny Hubbard and wife Shanna, Eric Robards and wife Kelsi, Kyle Hubbard and wife Theresa, Kolby Hubbard, Brian Robards and wife Ashli, Jessica Irwin and John Hill and wife Gina; 15 great-grandchildren, Hadley, Brynlee, Evrett, Kenneth, Kenton, Konnor, Khloe, Kyleigh, Klair, Aurelia, Ellowen, Kasen, Ryder, Barrett and Kennedy; a sister, Norma Lindsay of Belton, Missouri; and a special friend, Roberta Sage of Butler, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dana Allen on January 17, 2007; two brothers, William and John Allen; and a sister, Josie Hill.
