Newly elected Cass County Officials sworn in
Kansas teen dies after SUV strikes a tree
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Nathan Brown, 17, Pittsburg, Kansas was northbound on S Rouse Street just north of Adams Street in Pittsburg.
The SUV traveled off the the roadway to the left and struck a tree. Brown was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Frontier Forensics.
He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.
Obituary - Virginia Irene Paul
Virginia was united in marriage to Gary W. Paul on September 4, 1964 in Sedalia. They lived in Lee's Summit, MO for a couple of years before moving to Harrisonville in 1969. Virginia was a Drivers Examination Clerk for the Missouri State Highway Patrol in the Harrisonville office for 21 years, retiring in 2004. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Harrisonville, was a volunteer for the Harrisonville Senior Center and Meals on Wheels, and was a member of the Cass Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. Virginia loved spending time with the grandkids, enjoyed music and line dancing.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers: Roy, Bob, Walter, Kenneth, and Cecil; and five sisters, Bea Cole, Luetta Novak, Lena Taylor, Velma Shackles, and Cora Lewis. She is survived by her husband, Gary Paul, Harrisonville, MO; two daughters, Shelly Grubb, Lone Jack, MO; and Shawna Casper, Tulsa, OK; two brothers, Harold Lewis, Millport, AL; and Lloyd Lewis, Bates City, MO; seven grandchildren: Alisha, Jessica, Mickaela, Miranda, Jordan, Jonah and Emily; two great-grandchildren, Kaycee and Dimitri; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2024 from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM at the Faith Baptist Church in Harrisonville, Mo
Arrest made after shots fired in Belton
Officers began their investigation and were able to determine a suspect and suspect vehicle description which was broadcast to surrounding agencies.
A short time later, officers were notified that the suspect vehicle had been located at a nursing facility in Raymore. Belton officers responded to the facility and, with the assistance of Raymore officers, were able to identify and locate the driver of the suspect vehicle.
This individual was taken into custody for further investigation. Officers were also able to locate and recover a weapon of the same caliber used in the shooting at the scene.
On 12-25-2024, the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office charged Pharrell Canady of Belton with three counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and three counts of Armed Criminal Action in relation to these incidents. Pharrell is currently being held in the Cass County Jail on no bond.
This is yet another example of the teamwork between your Belton officers, the public, our partner law enforcement agencies and the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office resulting in a dangerous criminal being taken off the streets.
Obituary - Dennis "Denny" Shannon
Dennis “Denny” Lee Shannon, age 83 of Merwin, Missouri died Sunday, December 22, 2024 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was born February 12, 1941 to Glen Damon and Doris Mae Trued Shannon in Merwin. His birth mother died when he was four years old and his father married Wilma Jean Dean who raised Denny as her own.
Denny is survived by his wife, Delores Shannon of the home; a daughter, Delora Jean Fritts and husband Kelly of Drexel, Missouri; two sons, Douglas Lee Shannon and wife Debbie of Drexel, Missouri and Matthew Darin Shannon and wife Lori of Adrian, Missouri; nine grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, C.J. Shannon and wife Teresa of Apache Junction, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents; two granddaughters, Dora Lee Shannon and Chelsea Ann Shannon; and a brother, Larry Shannon.
Major Michael A. Turner named the 25th Superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol
“Appointing the next Superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol—one of the nation’s finest law enforcement agencies—is a task that we did not take lightly, and I am confident in Major Turner’s qualifications and experience to lead the agency,” Governor-Elect Kehoe said. “My administration is ready to get to work on improving safety and security in our communities, and I look forward to Major Turner and our MSHP troopers playing a large role in that effort.”
Major Turner currently serves as commander of the Field Operations Bureau. He has direct oversight responsibility for all nine troops, the Aircraft Division, and the Water Patrol Division.
“I’m humbled to receive this appointment and look forward to working with Governor-Elect Kehoe and incoming DPS Director James to take care of our troopers on the road, enforce laws to improve public safety, and strengthen the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s distinguished reputation as the state’s premiere law enforcement agency,” said Major Turner.
Turner was appointed to the Patrol on January 1, 1996, as a member of the 71st Recruit Class. Upon graduating from the Patrol’s Law Enforcement Academy, he was assigned to Troop F, Zone 5, Camden County. He was promoted to corporal and designated assistant supervisor of Zone 8, Callaway County, on April 1, 2001. He transferred to Zone 5, Camden/Miller counties on February 28, 2004. On April 29, 2007, he was promoted to sergeant and designated zone supervisor of Zone 6, Moniteau/Morgan counties. Turner served as Troop F SWAT team leader from 2004 to 2011 and founded the Central Missouri Tactical Officers Association. He was promoted to lieutenant on November 1, 2011, and assigned to Troop F Headquarters. On March 1, 2015, Turner was promoted to captain and designated commanding officer of Troop F, Jefferson City. On April 1, 2019, Turner was promoted to major and named commander of the Support Services Bureau. On March 1, 2022, Turner was named commander of the Field Operations Bureau.
Major Turner was born in Texas and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He earned an Associate of Arts from Metropolitan Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice from Columbia College, and a Master of Arts in sociology and criminal justice from Lincoln University. He is a graduate of the St. Louis University Law Enforcement Leadership and Organizational Change program and the Missouri Police Chief’s Association Command College. He completed Police Leadership: The West Point Model Executive Level Course and the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Leadership Missouri program. Turner is also a recipient of the David Steward Academic and Leadership Award and the Patrol’s Valor Award.
Major Turner and his wife, Stacy (Hodges), have two children, Evan and Elizabeth, and a grandson, Rowan.

Obituary - Beverly Jeane Monroe
Beverly was a career-RN, working most of her life at Truman Healthcare in Lamar, MO. She and Chris had lived in Versailles the past 7 years.
In addition to her husband, Chris, Beverly is survived by 3 grandchildren; 4 brothers; 1 sister; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter, Lisa Rolan.
The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30a.m.on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Ferry Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow in Newton Burial Park, Nevada, MO with Pastor Terry Mosher officiating.
