Update from Osage Valley Electric Cooperative 6:00 p.m.

Update 6:00 PM: While we have restored power to many this afternoon, we continue to have new outages come in and more poles go down. We are still hovering around 500 meters out. As the sun goes down and the snow continues to blow, decreasing visibility even more, the progress will definitely slow down.

Osage Valley Electric Cooperative Crews are continuing to work but we want members to be aware that some will not have power throughout the night. We are so appreciative of all the kind words, prayers and words of encouragement for our linemen.

We are truly blessed with the best members and we are appreciative of your continued support and patience.

Road closed in Butler

Happening now in Butler emergency crews have closed Mill street from Delaware Street to Main Street due to power lines over the road.

Please avoid this area and please stay home if you can.

From one of our on duty Deputies:

From one of our on duty BCSO Deputies:
2 p.m. update:

Roads are still not great. MODOT has been working hard at it all night and day doing great work but only so much they can do. Do NOT drive today. The road you’re driving on might “look good” but with the temps dropping as fast as they are going to in the next couple of hours and the worst part of the storm literally knocking on our door, the roads are going to glaze over and have a fresh little slippy slip added to the top. That’s not including that the part of the storm that’s going to hit us is literally causing visibility to be less than 20ft in Kansas right now.

The ice on the tree limbs that’s still building up are causing them to crack and fall, in some places over the roadways, so mix that in with the limited visibility and you will have an expensive tow bill and repair bill.

Stay home!
Thanks to MODOT, Lineman, and first responders who are literally working their tails off today.

That’s all I got. Stay home, stay warm, stay safe.

Walking in a winter wonderland

The first storm of 2025 has struck the area, bringing ice and now snow. It has caused a headache for first responders and highway maintenance workers.

We have received several reports of downed power lines, slide offs, and power outages. Remember if you don't have to travel then please stay home. Its simply not worth the risk driving in this weather.

Below enjoy some photos from the storm below:

Attention Countywide Disposal Customers

Safety of our employees and those in our communities is our #1 priority. Keep in mind our trucks are very heavy and do not do well in slick conditions. The roads in our southern area are nothing but ice with colder temps ahead. Our northern routes have too much snow to pass through safely.

Rural Customers: Monday and Tuesday routes will be suspended until next week. We will pick up two weeks worth of trash next week. We plan to run all Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday routes as normal.

Customers inside city limits of towns we serve: If the roads have been salted we will pickup Monday customers on Tuesday, Tuesday-Friday customers will be as usual.

Commercial Customers: Monday customers will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday-Friday customers will be picked up as usual.

This is all subject to change and we appreciate your understanding. Our team wants to work as bad as you want your trash gone, but safety is our top priority.

Thank you,
Lee McLain and Countywide Team

From The Bates County Sheriff's Office

We are going to put this simple today. There is ice everywhere, we all knew it was coming and could potentially be bad. We have worked multiple car accidents and vehicle slide offs.

Please limit travel to necessary travel only. When you get to your destination stay for a while. Maybe like 48 hours awhile…..

If you have to travel do it slow. Your life, your families lives, people in your community lives, and the lives of first responders are all at risk.

If you see a car in the ditch or off the road with yellow caution tape attached to it, it means we have already responded to it and you do not need to report it to 911.

Side roads are extremely slick and should be avoided at this time. Outer roads to the interstate are so slick you are not able to walk on them more less drive a 2 ton vehicle on them safely. Please avoid them at this time.
