Stolen vehicle recovered, arrest made
Over the weekend, the Nevada Police Department received a report of a stolen vehicle. During the investigation, deputies from the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the northwest portion of the county, where they successfully recovered the stolen vehicle.
With the assistance of Nevada Police detectives, the Sheriff’s Office quickly launched an investigation, leading to the identification and arrest of a suspect in the area.
The case will now be submitted to the Vernon County Prosecutor’s Office for the review of formal charges.

BCSO executes search warrant in Rich Hill
On January 13, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at 203 West Chestnut Rich Hill Mo. The Sheriff’s Office took one subject in custody for a warrant out of Vernon County. The arrest warrant was the result of a joint burglary investigation with Bates County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada Police Department where multiple firearms were stolen from a residence in Rockville and pawned in Nevada.
The Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Rich Hill Fire Department, Lees Summit Police Bomb Squad and the Bates County Ambulance.

Obituary - Verdia Mae Gray
Verdia Mae Gray, age 80, of Wellsville, Kansas, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025.
Visitation will be held at from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, Friday, January 17, 2025, at Dengel & Son Mortuary – Paola Chapel, 305 N Pearl St, Paola, Kansas 66071. Burial will take place at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Paola, Kansas.
Verdia was born on May 8, 1944, in Ottawa, Kansas. She was the daughter of Paul and Helen (Crocker) Johnson. She spent her early childhood years living in Ottawa, Kansas, before moving to Alaska, where her father was stationed during the Korean War. Verdia moved back to Ottawa, where she graduated from Ottawa High School, with the class of 1962.
She married Kenneth Gray on August 8, 1962. Together they had a son, Anthony. The couple lived in Iowa and California, before moving to Wellsville in 1970, where they purchased property and made their permanent home.
Verdia worked for the US Postal Service for many years as a letter carrier, working in Gardner, Ottawa, and Lawrence. She retired from the Postal Service after many years of service.
Verdia was an avid gardener, enjoyed tending the yard and taking care of the property. She enjoyed her Pepsi, going to the casinos with her girlfriends, and could always be found relaxing on the couch watching TV.
Verdia is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Gray, parents, Paul and Helen Johnson, sister, Judy Farrell, and brother, Larry Johnson.
She is survived by her son, Anthony (Cindy) Gray, two grandchildren, Angela Gray and Cody (Ashley) Gray, two great grandchildren, Emmett and Henry Gray, brother, Chuck Johnson, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made payable to the Wounded Warriors Project, c/o Dengel & Son Mortuary, 305 N Pearl Street, Paola, Kansas 66071.
Drexel Bobcats basketball schedule
Drexel High School basketball will travel to Northeast Vernon County High School tonight, 1/14, to take on the Knights. The varsity girls will play at 5:30 followed by the varsity boys. There are no JV games tonight.
The JV boys will be playing the sophomore team from Blue Valley High School on Wed., 1/15, starting at 6:00. This is the only game of the evening.
The high school boys basketball team will be traveling to Kingsville on Friday, 1/17, to take on the Tigers. The JV boys will play at 5:30 followed by the varsity boys. There will be no girls game due to the fact that Kingsville does not have a girls team this year.

Another cold plunge coming
Temperatures to remain below freezing with cold wind chills today and tomorrow.
A temperature rise will occur Thursday and Friday, with areas south of highway 50 possibly reaching 50 degrees on Friday.
Cold front Friday night returns temperatures to below freezing with a blast of arctic air filtering in next week. Thus, we may experience the coldest temperatures so far this season starting Sunday.
