Archie police warn of door to door sales without permit

The Archie Police Department is aware of representatives from Over the Top Restoration going door to door in our community. Please be advised that they have been informed they must complete and submit a valid peddler’s permit application with the City of Archie before continuing any sales activity.

We want to remind all businesses and residents that door-to-door sales without an approved permit are not permitted. This is to ensure the safety and transparency of all commercial activity within our community.
If you have any concerns or questions, please contact the Archie Police Department at [816-430-5242].
Thank you for helping us keep Archie safe and informed.

Obituary - Becky Marie Folsom

Becky Marie Folsom, age 78, of Deerfield, MO, passed away, Thursday, May 8, 2025, with her family at her side.

A woman of grit, heart, and unmistakable spirit

Becky Folsom was a force to be reckoned with—a woman who lived life on her own terms, with fierce loyalty and a deep, unwavering love for the people and things that mattered most to her. A loving mother, a lifelong caregiver, and a woman with just the right mix of sass and softness, Becky left her mark on everyone lucky enough to know her.

She built a long and meaningful career as a nurse, working as a Certified Medication Technician (CMT), where she poured her strength, skill, and compassion into helping others. She had the kind of no-nonsense approach that comforted people—not because she sugar-coated things, but because they knew she meant every word. Her patients weren’t just cases to her—they were people. And she treated them with the same care and candor she gave to her own loved ones.

Outside of work, Becky had a few guilty pleasures that brought her joy: scratch-off lottery tickets, the occasional gamble, and the thrill of leaving things up to chance. She could light up at the sound of a slot machine, just as easily as she could quiet down with a coloring book and a word search puzzle—simple pastimes that offered her a sense of calm and focus.

Becky also had a deep love for animals — especially the big-eyed, gentle dairy cows she admired so fondly. Her connection to animals was as honest and true as the way she connected to people. She understood the power of quiet companionship, and she gave her love freely to both two-legged and four-legged beings.

But above all else, Becky loved her family. Fiercely. Unconditionally. They were her world, her legacy, and her reason for fighting through the hard days. She protected, she provided, and she showed up—always. Her love was loud and lasting, and her presence was a steady anchor in a world that so often shifts.

Becky Folsom leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, resilience, and love. She wasn’t perfect—and she’d be the first to tell you that—but she was real, and she was ours. And the world feels a little dimmer without her in it.

We will miss her laugh, her stubborn streak, her warm hugs, and even the way she’d roll her eyes when she was right (which, let’s be honest, was most of the time). Becky, thank you for your love, your care, your grit—and for being exactly who you were.

Rest easy. You’ve more than earned it.

In addition to her husband Ivan, Becky was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Nathaniel Folsom, and a sister, Joann Lawson. Survivors include four children, Tammy Miller (Brian), Samantha Bebee (Carl), Christine Folsom-Fleig Sr. (Richard), Ivan Folsom Jr. (Stacey); grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Chelsie Bubel (Justin), Hailey Miller, Ethan Bebee, Richard L. Fleig Jr., Richard L. Fleig III, Jessica Smith (Eric), Wyatt Hatmaker, Dr. Viola M. Folsom, RJ Budd, Ivan G. Folsom III, (Bubba), and Christian Radford.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Fr. Peter Savidge officiating. Interment will follow at 3:00 pm, in Maple Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, KS.  The family will receive friends from 10-11:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Memorials are suggested in her memory to Nevada Animal Shelter c/o Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada.

Another String Attached to AIP Money

With the benevolent blue skies prevailing over the midwest last weekend, aviation was definitely encouraged. Aerial application was going full stream over the still-sodden farm fields and numerous practice instrument approaches were being made to the closed Butler airport, including one business jet checking out a new avionics installation.

Butler Airport was reopened to traffic last weekend, with new LED lighting and other improvements. The cost of operating the new system will be much cheaper and the lights are brighter. Jeff Gorden went flying in the family Beech Bonanza E35 and Chris Hall got one of his Cessna 182s out for a test run. A Cessna Skyhawk and a Skylane RG were in on Saturday. I flew the club Skyhawk out of its temporary base at Nevada, with a side trip to Prairie City, and then we performed a flight review for a friend at Harrisonville, using one of Sky 4’s rental Cessna 150s. On both missions, the advisory frequencies were filled with good-weather radio chatter.

As if the overly-extended crew aboard the USS Harry S Truman aircraft in the Persian Gulf didn’t have enough bad karma going on, reported on in last week’s column, the ship lost another F/A 18 Hornet on May 4th, when the go-around procedure from a bad landing didn’t work. The bird went into the sea but the crew ejected and was picked up by the rescue chopper.

Bad luck and good luck for the Italian Air Force’s Freece Tricolori jet demonstration team. On May 6, the 10-ship formation was flying a show at a Mediterranean island when three of the Aermacchi MB-339’s nudged into each other. The pilots regained control sufficiently to get their planes safely on the ground but with serious damage; one guy broke his leg.

When the FAA doles out money from the Airport Improvement Program (a.k.a.“trust fund”, although there’s no actual fund and very little trust) using tax money collected from pilots and passengers, it attaches strings to the funds that it can use to yank back the 90% grant it gave. Those grant assurances are to ensure the airport stays open for 20 years and treats all users fairly. There are now 40 stipulations to be kept, the latest being that the airport sponsor can’t ban the sale of leaded avgas until an approved substitute is available, which is still forthcoming.

Our question from last week was about the origin of the name “Ercoupe” given to the little 1940 sport plane that was built up through the 1950s. It was from the first company producing it, the Engineering and Research Company, or ERCO. For next week, tell us how the Butler runway lights are able to shine at the same brightness despite their location over a two-mile loop of wiring. You can send your answers to kochhaus1@gmail.com

Butler signs with Alliance Water Resources

During Butler's regular council meeting on May 6th it was announced that the city of Butler has signed a contract with Alliance Water Resources to oversee operation, maintenance and reporting for the water and wastewater plants.

According to City Administrator Corey Snead it was "a step in the right direction" as Butler, along with many other smaller towns are having trouble finding certified plant operators, Alliance provides operators with the latest training and certification as well as providing necessary mandated reports required by the state of Missouri.

During the meeting, a representative of Alliance was on hand to answer questions and provide additional details regarding the Butler operations.
