Tips for dealing with scammers

Courtesy of the Harrisonville Police Department

Scammers goals are to get your personal information and/or money. These fraudsters utilize fear, desperation, crisis, and pressure tactics to con and prey on their victims. Scammers' delivery methods and messaging can quickly change. Basic security measures can help protect you from the latest and most common scams.

• Enable multifactor authentication.
Add this feature to any account(s) that offer it as an option and try to use a non-SMS version to protect yourself from SIM swapping (theft of your cellular telephone number, a form of identity theft).
• Research companies.
Before you make a purchase or donation, take a few minutes to review the company. Do a web search for its name plus "scam" or "reviews". Research charities on Charity Navigator or Charity Watch.
• Do NOT refund or forward overpayments.
Be careful whenever a company or person asks you to refund or forward part of a payment. Often, the original payment will be fraudulent and taken back later.
• Be vigilant about unusual payment requests.
Scammers frequently request payments through wire transfers, money orders, cryptocurrencies, or gift cards. These types of payments can be more challenging to trace, and reverse compared to other payment methods, potentially leaving you with limited options for recourse.
If you're the victim of a scam, you can file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC 1-877-382-4357 or visit IC3.gov) and your local law enforcement.

She loved hearing the sounds of nature, such as the birds singing, coyotes howling, and the bullfrogs in harmony in the pond; all of it was music to her soul. In her young days, she attended Shady Dell Rural School through 8th grade, where she never missed a day. She then attended Butler High School and graduated with the class of 1966.

Doris worked at Glenn's Café in Butler, MO, as a dishwasher and part-time fry cook. She later moved to Kansas City and began her 35-year career at the Community Blood Center. Doris cared for and loved animals of all kinds, from her horses in her youth to her loved dogs, Tippy and Buddy, and made sure her bird feeders were always full. She also loved her flowers and was always finding new ones to plant on her back deck and taking photos and sharing those memories with her friends. Doris loved listening to music, especially Chris LeDoux and Jim Reeves.

'Pack A Police Car' school supply promotion exceeds expectations

Well, once again, this community we serve has left us speechless. On Thursday night, we did a school supply drive called Pack A Police Car. We had never done this before and weren't really sure what to expect on a Thursday night for only 2 hours.

As you can see below, our expectations were far surpassed and we are so thankful! In that short time period, we received enough donations to fill 4 shopping carts and had hundreds of dollars in cash donations that we used to buy even more. The generosity and support we saw that night reminded us all why we are so proud to serve the citizens of Harrisonville. Thank you for always supporting us when we try new ways to be involved with the community!
