Arrest made after women delivers Bible to jail with drugs inside in Vernon County

A warrant has been issued for a Nevada resident after Detention Officers located what they believe to be marijuana hidden inside of a Bible intended for an inmate in the County Jail.

According to officials with the Sheriff’s Office, Ashley A Despain has been charged with Delivery Or Possession Of a Controlled Substance in a Jail, a class D Felony, when she walked into the Sheriff’s Office Monday evening asking to give a Bible to an inmate.

According to Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher, the Detention Officer inspected the Bible and located a substance believed to be marijuana hidden inside the binding.

A deputy was called and Despain was arrested at the Sheriff’s Office. Mosher said another person who drove to the Sheriff’s Office with Despain was also arrested on an unrelated warrant. The Sheriff said they have caught people attempting to smuggle contraband and drugs into the jail before, but never in a Bible.

“If you show up at the Sheriff’s Office with drugs, you shouldn’t be surprised when you get arrested” Mosher said. Despain is now being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

Obituary - Thelma Lucille Pritchett

Thelma Lucille Pritchett, 85, Nevada, MO passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center in Nevada following a lengthy illness. Thelma was born March 18, 1933 in Rosco, MO to George Marion “Tator” and Mildred Mae (Manley) Blagg.

Thelma grew up in the Cedar Springs area in Cedar County and graduated from El Dorado Springs High School Class of 1948. She lived most of her adult life in Vernon County working for a time at Nellie Don and Kellwood Tent Factory in Nevada and then for an additional 22 years at Nevada State Hospital until her retirement in 1991. Thelma loved gardening, had a kind heart for animals, and most of all loved being grandmother to her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her three children, Ellen Smith, Nevada; Angie Modlin and her husband Paul, Moundville, MO, Dale Pritchett and his wife Lori, Holton, KS; eight grandchildren, Destiny Smith, Trey Silvola, Joshua Modlin, Brittney Modlin, Jeremy Modlin, Cody Modlin, Izaac Pritchett, Mary Pritchett; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Delbert Blagg, Cedar Springs, MO; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Ruth Kelley, Betty Mayben, Mary Trigg, and one brother, Kenneth Blagg.

Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at Moore Cemetery in Nevada with Rev. Jerod Lamb officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at Ferry Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested in her memory to Baron Alzheimer’s Care Center in Nevada in c/o Ferry Funeral Home, Nevada.

Nevada Police make arrest in connection to recent business burglaries

During recent months officers of the Nevada Police have responded to several reported burglaries at local businesses occurring during the overnight and early morning hours.
 
Through the course of these investigations it was determined the suspect had forced entry, damaged property and stolen property and currency at multiple businesses. Detectives investigating one of the more recent burglaries were able to develop a possible suspect.

Detectives located the suspect at a house in the 1100 block of S. Main Street on March 22, 2018. The suspect was taken into custody on unrelated arrest warrants. Through the course of these investigations officers were able to link the suspect to these recent burglaries.

Detectives then obtained and executed a search warrant in the 500 block of S. Chestnut Street related to this investigation. During the search of the residence officers located additional evidence that linked the suspect in question to these burglaries.

The male suspect, identified as Dallas D Pilcher, age of 37 of Nevada was taken into custody for investigation of burglary and transported to the Vernon County Jail for holding.

On Wednesday March 28, 2018 the following charges were filed against Pilcher through the Vernon County Associate Court:

One (1) Count, Burglary 1st Degree - Class B Felony
Ten (10) Counts, Burglary 2nd Degree - Class D Felony
Three (3) Counts, Attempted Burglary - Class E Felony
Two (2) Counts, Stealing – Class D Felony
Two (2) Counts, Property Damage – Class E Felony
Nine (9) Counts, Stealing – Class A Misdemeanor
Nine (9) Counts, Property Damage – Class B Misdemeanor

Pilcher is being held in the Vernon County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 cash or surety bond.

Obituary - Bobby “Bob” Lewis Conley

Bobby “Bob” Lewis Conley, 84 of Butler, Missouri passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at his home. Cremation, with private family memorial service planned for a later date. Memorial Contributions are suggested to the Butler Senior Center. Arrangements entrusted to the Mullinax Funeral Home (660-679-0009) in Butler, Missouri. Bob was born a twin on February 2, 1934 in Independence, Missouri to Marvin L. Conley and Mamie (Braddy) Conley. He was married to Loretta Sue Beckham on August 18, 1956. After 45 years of marriage, Sue predeceased him on January 27, 2001.

Bob grew up in foster care from the age of five. Although he was separated from his family of five siblings as a child, he enjoyed a close relationship with them in later years. He graduated from Butler High School in 1952. After high school, Bob served two years in the US Army, then spent the remainder of his adult life in Butler working at the Osage Valley Electric Coop. He retired after 44 years of employment.

After retirement, Bob became active in various community service activities. Among those were Habitat for Humanity, City Council, Butler Planning Commission and others. He was the first Chairman of the Neighborhood Pride Committee. He donated many hours of labor, alongside friend, Bud Armstrong, refurbishing the old high school gymnasium. For most of his life, Bob was a member of the RLDS church, then attended the Butler Christian Church after Sue's death, where he sang in the choir.

Bob was a talented man. He had a beautiful singing voice and in his early years brought tears to the eyes of those who heard him sing The Lord's Prayer in church. He enjoyed painting pictures to share with family, built beautiful furniture, had a picture framing business, and the stained glass pieces he made were amazing. His main love was his home and yard, for which he is quite famous around Butler.

Bob is survived by two daughters, Kathy Bledsoe Curry and Barb (Mike) Webb, both of Butler; two sons, Greg (Virginia) Conley of Gladewater, Texas, Jimmy Conley of Overland Park, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Larry Bledsoe, Ben Bledsoe, Mandy Martinez, Brad Courson, Jamie Webb, Jenifer Conley, Bryan Conley and Sherri Conley; and twelve great grandchildren; brothers, Gene Conley and Jim Cable; sisters, Eva May Dye and Peggy Peterson. He also leaves special friend, Linda Smith. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Bill Conley.

AIM Easter Egg Hunt is 1:00 p.m. at the Montrose Park Saturday, March 31 (rain or shine) for children ages 0 to 4^th Grade.  Bring your own basket.

FCCLA will be cooperating with the Optimist Club on the Easter Egg Hunt at the City Park on 2:00 p.m. Saturday March 31 after the baseball clinic.

The Church of God (Holiness) invites the children of the community to an Easter egg hunt, hosted by Pat Shockey, on Easter Sunday (April 1) at the Church on the corner of Beech and First Streets at 2:00 p.m. until the eggs are gone.  They will reschedule if there is inclement weather. 

The Appleton City PTO will have a Bake Sale Saturday March 31 in front of Food Fair Supermarket starting at 7:30.  Baked good donations can be left at Brown Chiropractic starting at 9:00 a.m. on Friday March 30. All proceeds help support the AC PTO.  The AC PTO supports the elementary teachers and staff and provides funds for class field trips. Come out and support your local PTO and let them help you with your Easter baking. 

The Appleton City Cemetery will start spring clean-up soon. Please pick up flowers and decorations.

Hudson R-IX will not be in session Friday, March 30 or Monday, April 2 for Easter break.

The Montrose Festival Committee is hosting their Easter Chicken Dinner and Bake Sale March 31 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the VFW Hall.  Photos with the Easter bunny are available from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.  Dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 5 - 10 years old and under 5 years are free.  The Bake Sale is a freewill donation.

FarmHouse Kitchen will serve its annual Easter dinner Sunday, April 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  This year’s menu is roasted turkey, spiral sliced ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, deviled eggs, hot roll, homemade dessert and tea, coffee or water.  Children 5 and under dine for $4.99, 6-10 years old for 6.99 and adults for 13.99.  Reservations are appreciated but walk-ins welcome.  Sumo's Pub will be closed April 1and will re-open at 5:00 p.m. Monday April 2.

The 2018 Appleton City Spring City Wide Garage Sale dates will be April 6-7. Permits are $5 and can be purchased at City Hall through noon on April 4. A permit for the city pole shelter is $25, a stage permit is $15 and a lawn permit is $10. These can also be purchased on a first come, first served basis beginning March 26 at City Hall. Maps will be available at Food Fair, Powell's True Value and Casey’s. House of Joy Ministry will be at the City Park at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday to pick up donations. The Knights of Columbus will have their monthly pancake and sausage breakfast at the Knight’s Hall in Montrose on Sunday, April 8 from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m.  Treat your family to a hot breakfast you don’t have to cook or clean up.  A free will donation will be greatly appreciated

Kindergarten Round up Screening and Enrollment Day at Appleton City Elementary for the 2018 – 2019 school year will be held Tuesday, April 10.  If your child will be 5 before August 1, please call Malia Mount in the Elementary Office at 660-476-2108 for an appointment.  The following items are required for enrollment: immunization records, state issued birth certificate, social security card and proof of residence.  Your child can receive the immunizations that are needed to attend Kindergarten anytime on or after his/her fourth birthday.  You do not need to wait until age five. They encourage you to have your child fully immunized now and bring the immunization record to school on the day of Kindergarten screening. On Sunday, April 15, 2018, the AIM club of Montrose and other friends and family will host a fund raiser for Maria Goth Fennewald, currently of Appleton City.  Maria recently suffered from a severe stroke and continues to battle her daily recovery and the extensive therapy that is required.

A dinner of pulled pork and smoked chicken and all the fixings will be served at the Montrose Community Building from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  There will be a silent and live auction along with a gun raffle, bake sale, etc. AIM members will be taking orders for “Team Maria” t-shirts and there will be some for sale the day of the event but early sales are preferred.  A “Love Fund” account has been set up at the Montrose Saving Bank if you would like to just make a charitable donation.  If you would like to help, donate, etc. please call Kristina at 660-492-3436 or David at 660-492-7749.  If you are donating a large item for the auction, please contact them soon so they can get some of the larger item posted on the website.

University of Missouri Extension along with Lincoln University are working together to have a Sheep and Goat Workshop that focuses on internal parasite management on the afternoon of April 19 beginning at 4:00 p. m. at the Osceola First Baptist Church at 555 Walnut Street, Osceola.  Susan Jaster with Lincoln University Cooperative Extension Small Farm Outreach Program as well as MU Extension Regional Livestock Specialists Gene Schmitz and Patrick Davis will lead this workshop.  This workshop will include lecture, discussion, and hands-on activity related to body condition scoring, FAMACHA© Scoring, Fecal Egg Count in sheep and goats.  Linda Heryford will provide the sheep and goats used in the demonstrations.  In addition, participants will become certified in FAMACHA eye anemia system and along with the Five Point Check System, is used to determine when sheep and goats need to be dewormed. The workshop cost is $35 per person.  Preregistration, along with fee payment needs to be submitted by April 16 to the St. Clair County MU Extension Center at the St. Clair County Courthouse, P.O. The mission of the Appleton City Landmarks Restoration and Museum Photo Exhibit at the AC Fair is to preserve history and memories. This year, the focus of the exhibit will be the 1970 AC Centennial and the 1995 Quasquacentennial in preparation of the 2020 AC Sesquicentennial.
