Belton Police warn of scam

Over the last hour the dispatchers have received several phone calls from citizens reporting phone calls from people claiming to be the IRS. They say they are contacting you to get payment for past due taxes.

The scammers will call you and tell you that you have unpaid taxes and if you don't pay the IRS today, you will go to jail or lose your house.

We have tried to educate on this topic year after year, but the phone scammers are relentless and they are still able to steal money from good people. Please, share the information with your friends, family and especially any older people in your circle who seem to be the most vulnerable victims.

Their tactics are very high pressure and they are able to convince a lot of people to send them money. If ANYONE calls you and tells you to send money, give a credit card number or anything else similar, it is a SCAM, hang up on them.

Once your money is sent, it is next to impossible for your Police Department or your bank to recover your funds. The only way to stop these thieves is through education and prevention; help us do that by sharing this information with people you know!

Reminder: 9-1-1 is for EMERGENCIES. Do not call 9-1-1 about these calls.
