Obituary - James Madison Jones, Jr.

James Madison Jones, Jr., 85, Nevada, MO passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020 at Nevada Regional Medical Center in Nevada. Jim was born February 24, 1934 in Oronogo, MO to James M. Jones, Sr. and Emma Mae Cobb. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Jane Porter on March 17, 1957 in Nevada and she survives of the home.

Jim was raised in Oronogo and graduated from Webb City High School Class of 1952. He graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, IA, and then attended Pittsburg State Teachers College graduating with a Masters’ Degree in Industrial Arts. Jim taught at Metz and Rich Hill High Schools before coming to Nevada to work at the Nevada State Hospital. After many years there he retired as Superintendent of the Nevada Habilitation Center in 1992. He was a longtime member and evangelist of the Community of Christ Church. He was very active in his church and for many years could be found working at church camps in the summer.

In addition to his wife Dorothy, survivors include three sons, Kenny Jones and his wife Gwen, Nevada, MO, Bill Jones, St. Paul, MN, and George Jones and his wife Deborah, Pleasant Hill, MO; grandchildren, Chadd Jones, Clayton Jones, Chelsea Mendez, Jillian Jones, Jakelyn Hays, Jaleah Jones, Aubrey Jones; several great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Leora Worley, and Lois Yates.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Pastor Bill Garwood officiating. Interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Community of Christ Church in Nevada in c/o Ferry Funeral Home.


Drugs, guns found during traffic stop in Vernon County

According to Sheriff’s Office Officials, a Deputy conducted a traffic stop on C Hwy near the Walker area. While investigating the traffic stop, the Deputy was able to locate suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and two loaded firearms. 

Vernon County Sheriff Jason Mosher said it was the pro activeness of the Deputy that led to the seizure. “He was able to seize methamphetamine that was likely going to be distributed throughout our county.” 

The suspect has been identified as 51-year-old Richard K. Jackson, of Harwood. On Saturday morning, a warrant was issued by the Courts charging Jackson with: Trafficking Drugs-2nd Degree Unlawful Possession of a Firearm Unlawful Use of Weapon Jackson is being held in the Vernon County Jail on a $50,000 cash only bond.

Obituary - Michael Counterman

Michael Counterman, 39 of Foster, Missouri passed away Sunday, January 26, 2020 at his home in Foster. Cremation, with a memorial visitation to be held Monday, February 3, 2020 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Mullinax Funeral Home, Butler (660-679-0009).

Obituary - Mildred Deloris Heavener

Mildred Deloris Heavener, 79, of Butler died Monday, January 27, 2020 at the Butler Center.

Mildred is survived by three sisters, Barbara and Betty Heavener both of Butler, Missouri, Ida Bell Plank and husband Donald of Clark, Missouri, two brothers Billy George Heavener and wife Donna and Jimmie D. Heavener of Kansas City, Missouri.
