Obituary - Patty Lee (Shindler) Culbertson

Patty Lee Culbertson, 87, Nevada, MO passed away on Saturday, September 26th at the Kansas City Hospice House following a short illness. Patty was born on June 16th, 1933 to Raymond A. and Virginia M. Shindler in Nevada, MO.

She wedded Dean Culbertson on October 14th, 1966. They worked alongside each other for many years at Nelly Don. They were married for 31 years until his death. Upon retirement she remained in Nevada enjoying small town life.

Patty is survived by two sons, Scott Culbertson, Overland Park, KS, and Kenny Culbertson and his wife Mary Lou, Claremore, OK; Sheila Farley, California; two granddaughters, Laci and Kena; her brother Ernest Shindler; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Gary and son Randy.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada, MO with Pastor Bill Platt officiating. Interment will follow in Moore Cemetery, Nevada. The family will receive friends from 5-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be sent to the United Way of Vernon County.


Texas man arrested in Cass County

On September 27, 2020 at approximately 11:10 pm, Harrisonville Police Officers were dispatched to Love’s Truck Stop located at 2611 Brookhart Drive regarding a subject taking pictures and/or videos up the dress of an unsuspecting women. Officers arrived and spoke with store employees who witnessed the act and spoke with the victim. 

The suspect, Adrian Torres-Villanueva was also contacted. After investigating the situation Mr. Torres-Villanueva was taken into custody. Mr. Torres-Villanueva a 26-year-old from McAllen, TX was eventually charged with one count of Invasion of Privacy a class E Felony and a signature bond was issued.

Obituary - Louis M. Wait, Jr.

 Louis M. Wait, Jr., Nevada, MO went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the age of 92. Louis was born August 12, 1928 in Waldo, MO to Louis Martin and Lizzie Mable (Woods) Wait. He was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Thompson on June 24, 1951 and she preceded him in death on December 8, 2010.

Jr’s first job was at the State Hospital in Nevada. He had a variety of jobs before becoming owner/operator of Gotchall’s DX station in Nevada. Jr retired from the Nevada R-5 School district where he spent several years as a mechanic and bus driver. He made several trips as the activity driver hauling students and many faculty to various events. Jr loved to dance as well as travel and was fortunate to visit many places and made many friends. He loved visiting with people and never knew a stranger.

Jr joined the United States Army on August 25, 1952 and served in the Korean War. He was later honorably discharged as a Motor Pool Sargent. He was baptized August 12, 1990 at the First Christian Church in Nevada and remained a member there.

He is survived by his children, daughter, Margaret (Leon) Shumaker, Nevada, MO and three grandchildren, Clarissa (Braden) McBride, Carthage, MO, Alicia (Kevin) Wolfe, Olathe, KS, and Ryan (Ashley) Shumaker, Webb City, MO, along with five great-grandchildren. Son, Tommy (Kathy) Wait, Bronaugh, MO, and three grandchildren, Travis (Dana) Wait, Bronaugh, MO, Joni (David) Klumpp, Deerfield, MO, and Becky (Drew) Quinn, Hale, MO, and six great-grandchildren. Daughter, Jeanie (Larry) Reis, McComb, OH, and one grandson, Jason (Shawna) Reis, Fostoria, OH, and four great-grandchildren as well as seven great-great-grandchildren. Son, Jerry (Priscilla) Wait, Nevada, MO and two grandchildren, Leslie (Ron) Maher, Redfield, KS, and Gabe (Erica) Wait, Albania, and four great-grandchildren. Daughter, Teresa (Berry) McClure, Nevada, MO, and one granddaughter, Kellie McClure (Brian Greenfield), Nevada, MO and two great-grandchildren. Daughter, Shelly Simpson, Gastonia, NC and two granddaughters, Baylee Simpson, Springdale, AR, and Ashley (Scott) Brownfield, Joplin, MO.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, parents, and several siblings, Richard, Etta, Eugene, and Cecil.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Clifford Pettibon officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Update: Rollover accident near Foster seriously injures one



On 9/28/20 around 2:20pm the Missouri State Highway Patrol in Bates County along with Bates County EMS and Bates County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on Route U and CR 6508 in rural Bates County.


The Missouri State Highway Patrol says the accident occurred when the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 34 year old William E. Swarens traveled off the left side of the roadway and overturned, ejecting the driver.

Mr. Swarens sustained serious injuries in this accident and he was transported to Bates County Memorial Hospital in Butler.

The vehicle was totaled and towed from the scene of this accident by Gilkey's Tow of Rich Hill, Missouri.

Henry County Health Center confirms 12 new positive cases of COVID-19


The Henry County Health Center (HCHC) has received confirmation of twelve more positive cases of COVID-19. Seven who reside in Clinton, two who reside in Deepwater, two who reside in Blairstown and one who resides in the town of Montrose. All close contacts to confirmed cases. This brings the total number of confirmed positive cases in Henry County to 221. 

All contact tracing has commenced and all parties that have had close contact are being notified. HCHC continues to encourage residents to practice social distancing, washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, and to remain home if you are sick. 

The CDC continues to recommend that individuals to wear a face covering when you are in public, and are unable to social distance, to assist in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Obituary - Otis G. Leaton

Otis G. Leaton, 57, of Clinton, Missouri, formerly of Independence, Mo., passed away unexpectedly Friday evening, September 25, 2020 at his home. He was born October 3, 1962 in Shawnee Mission, Kansas the son of Fletcher Leaton and Betty Jean (Bond) Leaton.
Otis was employed with AAA Trash Service in Buckner, Mo., for several years. He was a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan. He was a collector of various objects, but mainly clocks. He loved dogs. Surviving are twin daughters, Felicia and Fallon Leaton, Columbia, Mo.; one brother, William Leaton, Sedan, Ks.; one sister, Sue Ogle and husband John, Blue Springs, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helen M. Leaton; the mother of his twin daughters, Karen Harris; and his four-legged faithful companion, Baby. Memorial services will be Saturday, October 3, 2020 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., at Dickinson Park, 1700 Dickinson Road, Independence, Mo., 64050. Hugh “Dick” Richard King, 85, of East Lynne, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at Crown Care Center in Harrisonville, Missouri.
