Kansas company recalls ground beef because of E. Coli contamination

National Beef Packing Co., based in a Liberal, Kan., is recalling approximately 22,737 pounds of raw ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli.

• 10 lb. packages of “National Beef” 80/20 Coarse Ground Chuck, package code “0481.”
• 10 lb. packages of “National Beef” 81/19 Coarse Ground Beef, package code “0421.”
• 10 lb. packages of “National Beef” 80/20 Fine Ground Chuck, package code “0484.”

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) reports “there is a reasonable chance that using or consuming contaminated products could cause serious, adverse health consequences, even death.”
An FSIS news release reports the products in question have a “Use By / Sell By Date” of June 14, 2013. FSIS says the products were produced May 25, 2013 and shipped to various retail establishments and institutions. USDA is urging consumers to check their freezers.
No illnesses have been reported.
