Betty Ruth Sheridan, age 84, died peacefully on the evening of November 8th surrounded by her family. She developed respiratory failure following surgery to repair a fractured hip.

Betty was born at home near Ballard, Missouri and graduated from Ballard High School in 1947.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jack Sheridan, and sons, Dr. Randy (Mary) Sheridan and Dr. Kim Sheridan. Survivors also include brothers, Keith Dixon and Dean (Meita) Dixon, and one sister, Faye (Bill) Spangler. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Edna Dixon, and brothers, Robert Dixon and Raymond Dixon. Betty experienced tragedy early in her life with the loss of both her parents when she was seventeen. She is also survived by a special first cousin, Rosellen Wainscott, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

After high school, Betty moved to Kansas City where she married and started her family. She worked nearly 20 years in the administrative office at Shawnee Mission West High School. She officially “retired” in 1994 but continued to work another 11 years at Kohl’s Department Store as she enjoyed staying active. She finally retired for “real” at the young age of 80. For many years, she volunteered at Shawnee Mission Medical Center and was an active member of Shawnee United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

Her three grandchildren were the joys of her life, Adam, Zach, and Hilary Sheridan. Although she had a fractured hip, Betty courageously attended the recent wedding of her eldest grandson and welcomed Lauren Calovich into the family.

This sweet, petite lady will be missed by her family and friends. The family wishes to thank the caring people at the Sweet Life of Rosehill, the wonderful physicians and nurses at the University of Kansas Medical Center, and the compassionate staff at St. Luke’s Hospice House.
