Extra Heating Help Available for Missourians

Jefferson City, MO - With Missourians facing a tough combination of a very cold and snowy winter and skyrocketing heating costs, community agencies are encouraging all those who may need help keeping the heat on to apply for assistance.

It's the winter double whammy: plunging temperatures and skyrocketing home heating costs, but help is available to make sure Missourians stay warm. Heather Lockard of the Missouri Association for Community Action encourages anyone who is struggling to keep the heat on this winter to apply for assistance, since the state has released millions of dollars to help families hit hard by the one-two punch.

"We have 19 agencies that cover every county and the city of St. Louis in Missouri to help them identify if they quality for those services, and if they do qualify then to be able to get those services to them. "
Also, Governor Jay Nixon has doubled the maximum amount of propane assistance Missouri families can receive through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance program. More information on where to apply is at "CommunityAction.org."

Retail propane prices averaged about two dollars and thirty cents per gallon this time last year, but have spiked above five dollars at times this winter. Lockard says that puts many Missourians in a very difficult situation.

"There's a concern that we may or may not have enough propane for our Missouri residents and businesses, but the other concern as well is if low-income individuals will be able to afford that cost of propane. "
Missouri is one of many states that has launched an investigation into the rising propane prices, looking for any evidence of price gouging.
