BBB Brief: Easy Yard Sale Scam
The Better Business Bureau of Southwest Missouri has a warning to new bargain shoppers on Craigslist. Watch out for a trap called "Easy Yard Sale."
Typically, the scammer claims a family member has died or they inherited the item and need to sell it quickly. That's the excuse they give and then you're told a company online is handling the transaction. It turns out "Easy Yard Sale" is a dead end and you end up paying for something you never get.
"They'll send you to the website and it will look very, very real. But what they're doing is using that as a cover to get your money and then you'll never hear from them again," warns T.J. Loudis of the BBB of Southwest Missouri.
Loudis also says online shoppers should avoid deals involving shipping or escrow services. Always try to purchase directly from the seller and see the item for sale before buying it.
