UPDATE: Ray-Pec School District bus crash

On Tuesday, October 20th at approximately 4:15 pm emergency crews were called to the area of SW Ward Road near SW Stuart Road on the report of a two car crash involving a school bus. Officers arriving on scene located a Ray-Pec School District bus that was carrying the girls volleyball team to a match at Lees Summit West High School. The bus was carrying 20 girls and coaches and a single bus driver.

The driver of the bus told investigators that he had missed the initial turn for the high school and was attempting to make a u-turn when the bus was struck by a flatbed truck that was also traveling northbound. Both drivers refused medical treatment at the scene. Thirteen students from the bus were transported to five area hospitals via six different assisting ambulance providers. Twelve of the girls were listed as minor injuries while one student was listed as serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation and no citations were issued at the scene. The north and southbound lanes of Ward road will be closed until approximately 9:00 p.m.
