Benton County woman charged with murder

Viola Patience Bowman
A Clay County grand jury charged a 53-year-old woman from Warsaw with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of her husband in 2012.

Viola Patience Bowman is in the Benton County jail in Warsaw. She also faces a charge of armed criminal action. Her bond is $1 million.

Police initially investigated the death in November 2012 of Albert Bowman, 53, as a possible home invasion. Viola Bowman said she found her husband's body after returning to get ice cream.

Investigators haven't commented on a possible motive in the case. Little information is available about crimes when a grand jury issues an indictment, because, unlike when a prosecutor files a charge, no probable cause statement is made public. Probable cause statements reveal information about how a crime took place and why investigators think a suspect did it.

Albert Bowman had been an 11-year employee of Kansas City's Water Services Department. He and his wife had been married since 1978.
