Rep. Wanda Brown's Capitol Connection:
The 2017 legislative session began Wednesday, January 4. This session, like every session, will bring many new changes and opportunities. The early focus of the legislature will be jobs and economic development in the form of regulatory reform, labor reform and tort reform. Majorities in both chambers, as well as Governor Greitens, campaigned and won decisively on these reforms.
On Monday, January 9, thousands of Missourians traveled to Jefferson City to join in the ceremonies of welcoming our new statewide officials. Many House members attended events throughout the day, beginning with an interfaith prayer service, followed by recognition of Missouri’s heroes, watching the new Governor being sworn into office and ending the day with the Inaugural Ball in the Capitol Rotunda. I enjoyed visiting with many people from District 57 who came to enjoy the festivities.
One of the first bills passed in the House was House Bill 60 which is a gift ban from lobbyists. This bill prohibits gifts such as tickets to sporting events or concerts and one-on-one meals provided by a lobbyist to an elected official.
The House is also looking at Missouri’s regulatory framework and licensing requirements to make it easier to own and operate a business in Missouri. Governor Greitens also signed an execute order to freeze new government regulations that could harm businesses and families.
I value greatly your insights and perspective on issues that are important to you and your family. I listen to both sides of every issue whether or not I have a definitive position on the topic. I also appreciate your prayers during my tenure as State Representative.
As always, please do not hesitate to call or write me anytime with your questions or thoughts on these or any other issue. My Capitol office phone number is (573) 751-3971 and my email is wanda.brown@house.mo.gov.
