Middle-school and high-school students in Bates County have chances to earn cash prizes and scholarships through essay contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the VFW Auxiliary. District 6 VFW posts are in Adrian and Drexel.
The Patriot’s Pen contest is open to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders who are enrolled in public, private, parochial schools or who are homeschooled. The theme is “America’s Gift to My Generation” The national winner can receive $5,000.
The Voice of Democracy contest is open to high school students who are enrolled in public, private, parochial schools or who are homeschooled. The theme is “American History: Our Hope for the Future” The national winner can receive a scholarship worth $30,000.
To qualify, students must fill out an official entry form and submit it to a local VFW Post or Auxiliary. Posts will select their winner and submit the essay to the District 6 competition. The district winner moves on to the Department of Missouri competition. The deadline is October 31.
