Ghost Out Event at Sherwood R-8 School

Each year about 570,000 people die in the U.S. due to drug and alcohol use. Teen alcohol use kills 4,700 people each year, that’s more than all illegal drugs combined. Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teens, and about a quarter of the those crashes involved an underage drinking driver.

11 teens die everyday as a result of texting while driving. These types of accidents are happening all over the world and unfortunately, they can happen to us. Every 19 minutes there is a drug or alcohol related death in America. Drinking, doing drugs, texting and driving, these problems can occur in our school if we let them.

Today, we are going to do an activity that we would like to call Ghost Out. Every 20 minutes one of our students will be visited by the Grimm Reaper, they will be removed from class and when they return, they will no longer be with us.

They are a representation of one of the many teens that have lost their lives do to drugs, alcohol and unsafe driving. Once a student has been visited by the Grimm Reaper, they will have their face painted white and they will no longer be able to interact with other students and teachers.
