Curtis (Doc) Long Receives Highest MCA Honor

COLUMBIA, MISSOURI (Jan. 11, 2018) - Curtis (Doc) Long, Butler, Missouri, was presented with the Missouri Cattlemen's Association (MCA) Pioneer Award, which is the highest honor of distinction offered by the association, during the 50th Annual Missouri Cattle Industry Convention. Long has served the Missouri cattle industry for over 50 years.

"Not only has he been actively involved in producing Angus seedstock, he has been active in cattle industry organizations like MCA," said Lonny Duckworth, 2012 MCA President. "I think it is especially notable that he is a strong supporter of youth in our industry."

ong has contributed time and resources to MCA's junior programs and to other youth programs in the industry, according to Norm Garton, Garton Angus Ranch.

"As an advocate of junior programs and the Angus Foundation, he established in 1998 the Missouri State Fair Angus Carcass Contest, now in its 13th year," said Garton, who presented the award January 7, 2018. "He continues to fund scholarships within Missouri Angus and donates bull and female credits to the Missouri Cattlemen's Association to auction off to raise funds for scholarships and youth programs."

Long owns Briarwood Angus Genetics, which includes over 200 registered Angus cows. Each spring, the Long family host a production sale where nearly 100 head are sold. He was a charter member of U.S. Premium Beef and today continues to improve his family's cattle farm.

Long is also a physician who has been the Missouri Physician of the Year and recognized by the University of Missouri's School of Medicine for developing a residents' training program. MCA President Greg Buckman said Long is able to use his knowledge of the beef industry to explain to patients the health benefits of including beef in a heart healthy diet.

"Above and beyond Doc's contributions to MCA and to the entire beef industry in the state, he is uniquely positioned to help patients decipher fact from fiction when it comes to the nutrition of beef," said Buckman. "There are few people who have been able to have such an impact on the beef community. He truly is a "Pioneer."

The 50th Annual Missouri Cattle Industry Convention and Trade Show was held Jan. 5-7 at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri.
