Dick’s family moved to Walker from Hume when he was two. The family moved to L.A. California when his beloved brother Robert, at the age of 19 became a casualty of WWII. The family returned to Walker and Dick graduated from Walker High School. He joined the US Navy at the age of seventeen and served aboard the USS San Juan until his honorable discharge four years later. Dick returned to the farm in Walker and raised cattle with his father for six months before moving to Kansas City where he was employed by General Motors. He retired in 1971 after serving GM for thirty years. He returned to Walker where he raised cattle and a large garden. Dick enjoyed traveling to the many USS San Juan Ship reunions. His passions included delivering Meals on Wheels for many years. He enjoyed his routes and being able to visit and help the clients he delivered to. Dick also loved sports and was a season ticket holder of the Kansas City Chiefs for 42 years. Tailgating was his favorite part of the experience.
In addition to his wife Lucille, he was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Robert. He leaves two sons, Robert Horn of St Petersburg, Florida, Michael Horn of Walker, MO; and one daughter, Paula Sowell and husband Gary, Lenexa, KS; seven grandchildren whom he loved very much, Robert, Jackie, Allie, Hannah, Zachary, Lucilla, and Victoria.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, February 23, 2018 at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Friday until service time. Private family interment will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada.
Memorials may be made to “Meals-on-Wheels” with the funeral home serving as custodian.
