He was the son of Fred Henry and Minnie Jane (Lewellen) Schell, born August 23, 1924 in rural Appleton City, Missouri. He received his education at Appleton City High School. Shortly after leaving school in his sophomore year, he moved to California where he worked in a shipyard during the height of the Great Depression. He then joined the United States Army, where he served his country proudly during World War II. Upon completing this service, he married the love of his life, Gwendolyn Davis on December 24, 1946, his wife of nearly 67 years.
To this union four children were born: Jerry, Dale, Lexye, and Zenda. Then Rollin attended welding school and worked as a skilled tradesman, taking jobs for many years throughout the Midwest until he and his family returned to Appleton City area in 1958, where they purchased a farm East of town. Along with his many hours of agricultural labor, the Peabody Coal Company employed Rollin until his retirement. He dearly enjoyed life on the farm, tending his animals and crops.
Rollin and Gwen were incredibly devoted to their children, always supporting them with encouragement and their presence during school and with extracurricular activities. Rollin delighted in times spent with his grandchildren, enjoying many fun activities, such as taking them to auctions, camping, and shooting. He also made the best hamburgers on earth, according to his grandchildren. Apart from his family, he loved gardening, hunting, and fishing. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, who loved him very much.
