From the Linn County Kansas Sheriff's Department

With the upcoming holiday weekend, I am taking the opportunity to restate my office’s commitment to the safety of the children of Linn County.

Linn County Sheriff’s Office answers numerous calls every summer, Many for the operation of ATVs, four-wheelers, UTVs, go carts, and dirt bikes. To summarize the traffic laws that apply to these vehicles, they all are required have the following on county roads and lake community roads that are patrolled by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office:

An in-state or out-of-state licensed operator (Under 18 should wear protective equipment) Proof of liability insurance (Insurance to be operated on the road)
Equipped with lights if operated after dark (This requires more than a headlight) A seat for each rider (the fender and cargo rack are not seats)

It is also a violation of KSA 8-264 to permit an unauthorized person to drive. Deputies will be enforcing these traffic offenses. We will be warning children and parents, for some of these offenses, in order to encourage voluntary compliance. More dangerous and reckless behavior will be cited.

Along with the afore mentioned laws, the operators of these vehicles must follow all other state laws and county resolutions related to traffic.

I encourage everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend and summer.

Linn County Kansas Sheriff Paul Filla
