Convicted child rapist escapes south central Kansas prison

Police are searching for an inmate that reportedly escaped the Winfield Correctional Facility in south central Kansas on Saturday night.

According to Cowley County Emergency Management, prison staff were told inmate Robert Terrell jumped a fence on the east side of the facility in Winfield just before 9 p.m. Saturday.

Kansas Department of Corrections records show Terrell was moved to Winfield Correctional Facility on Wednesday.

Terrell was convicted of raping a child.

Terrell is a 36-year-old white man with red hair. His is 5'5 and weighs approximately 155 pounds.

Anyone who sees Terrell should not approach him and call 911.

The Winfield Correctional Facility is a transitional, minimum-security prison only surrounded by chain-link fencing. The prison can house up to 554 inmates.
