Wanted fugitive arrested after police pursuit from Kansas ends in Missouri


Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies assisted the Miami County Sheriff’s Office on Monday to capture a wanted fugitive. Miami County authorities attempted to stop vehicle that fled into Missouri. Cass County Deputies took over the pursuit as it traveled through Cass County. 

Peculiar and Belton Police Departments assisted with deploying tire deflation devices on S. St. Rt. YY west of Peculiar and on Peculiar Drive south of Belton.

A deputy with Cass County eventually stopped the vehicle on I-49 near E. 163rd street. Two subjects were taken into custody without injury. Deputies recovered a firearm and suspected narcotics.

The driver of the vehicle, Jonathan M. Smith, 30, Grandview, MO was arrested on several warrants:

Failure to Appear for Forgery - Jackson County - $25,0000
Probation Violation - Platte County - $13,000
Obstruct Domes. Viol Order Protection - Grandview PD - $4500 Transport Forged Forgery - Kansas City, KS - $15,000

Mr. Smith has been charged in Cass County with Class E Felony Resist Arrest/Fleeing, bond set at $10,000 10% Cash Only.

Smith is currently in custody at the Cass County Jail. A passenger was questioned and released.
