The deputy made contact with the subject who stated he was looking for gas to get to town.
The deputy sent the subject on his way and observed the vehicle stop at the next residence which the deputy knew to be an empty house. The deputy contacted dispatch and requested an on duty deputy to respond to check on the subject. The deputy was advised by dispatch that they had received a call about the subject vandalising another property owners property. The deputy then observed the vehicle drive over the hill and disappear.
The off duty deputy drove his four wheeler up the road to observe the subject’s location to give information about the whereabouts of the subject to responding deputies. The deputy was confronted in the middle of the road by the subject who had pulled down the road and abandoned his vehicle. The deputy contacted dispatch again to advise that he made contact with the subject in the road. While the deputy was on the phone with dispatch, the subject began punching the deputy in the face. During the altercation the deputy discharged his weapon striking the subject in the upper shoulder. The subject then retreated and was found by responding deputies in an adjacent field where he continued to fight uniformed deputies.
The subject was transported to the Bates County Memorial Hospital where he was then transported to Research Medical Hospital in Kansas City. After initial care the subject was released from the hospital then taken to Vernon County Jail. The Deputy was transported by ambulance to the Bates County Memorial Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released. The deputy will most likely require surgery to repair his injuries to his face.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office, as an outside agency, was requested to work the incident. As a standard procedure, the deputy has been placed on administrative leave. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Butler Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
