This year is the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment and the Appleton City chapter of GFWC - the Achievers invite the community to join in celebrating this milestone that gave women the right to vote. The group, dressing in white as the original suffragists frequently did, will hold a "Walk with the Suffragists" on Monday, August 24, at 9:00 a.m., beginning at the pavilion in Forest Park. At various stops along Main Street, there will be readings from the script, "Failure Is Impossible", which was read at the National Archives for the 75th anniversary celebration in 1995. Feel free to join in at any of the stops the group makes along the way - the pocket park at City Hall, Community First Bank, Food Fair, the U. S. The Sesquicentennial History book has been published is available at the AC Museum, which is open on Friday 1:30-4:30 p.m. until September.25. The book cost is $25 and $30 if mailed.
The Henry County Democrat Club is excited to announce their next monthly meeting. This meeting will be the first planning meeting as they move toward the November 3, 2020 General Election. In order to protect the health of our community members, the club will meet in the outdoor shelter on the west side of the Clinton Artesian Park across the street from the National Guard Armory (810 Marigold State Route). The goal of this meeting will be to meet their new members and develop leadership groups for upcoming activities. The short August 18 meeting will be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Attendees are recommended to bring a face covering if social distancing is limited. New members are welcomed.
There is a beef raffle to benefit the Appleton City Cemetery. There will be two chances to win ½ beef processed by Powell’s in Clinton. The drawing will be in the fall of 2020 with a definite date to be announced later. You need not be present to win. Tickets are $10 each. All proceeds go to support the Appleton City Cemetery. Tickets can be purchased at Zink Motors, St. Clair Co. Bank, Noble’s, Community First Bank, Powell’s Tru Value and Green Welding.
After much deliberation, Immaculate Conception Parish has canceled the Annual Labor Day Picnic. However, they will still hold the quilt raffle. Anyone who would like to support that raffle, may buy tickets from a parish member, the Parish Office, or at Montrose Savings Bank. They would like to thank all who have supported the Picnic for many years. They look forward to having it again next year.
Starting Monday, August 31, MU Extension will teach a Stay Strong, Stay Healthy course at the Clinton Community Center - Room 114 (1004 E. Sedalia). This class will meet twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. until Thursday October 29. Social Distancing protocols will be in place along with use of face coverings and enhanced sanitization of equipment and high-touch surfaces. Enrollment will be limited to 8 participants. The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program is based on simple, strength-building exercises that will improve balance, health and state of mind. No, it’s not strenuous weightlifting – it is not aerobic and you don’t have to get down on the floor. All exercises are done sitting in a chair or standing behind it and holding on to the back. You’ll start at a level that’s right for you and adaptations are made to accommodate participants with mobility challenges. No one is too inactive to participate. Building strength promotes quality of life and independence, especially for adults over age 60. Certified instructors lead this evidence-based program developed by the University of Missouri. These exercises are easy to learn, safe and effective and do not require special supplies or equipment – just you, stable and comfortable shoes and a water bottle! Exertion is not at a level you will need to shower or change clothes afterwards. You will learn exercises that you can continue at home. The cost for this eight week class is $50 per person. The 3rd annual Farm, Family & ME Summit for Women focuses on resilience, financial and farm stress, self-care, and mental well-being.
The free virtual event is 9:00 a.m. to noon Thursday, September. 3. Women are the caretakers of their families and often put themselves at the bottom of their priority lists. They hope this conference reminds them to take care of themselves along with providing resources and educational information. Rural mental health specialist Monica McConkey kicks off the Zoom session with “Put on Your Oxygen Mask!” She offers tips on coping with farm stress through self-care and techniques to strengthen mental well-being. Kelli Jo Buettner, vice president of scored lending and credit operations at FCS Financial, helps women in agriculture deal with money-related stress by understanding important issues in financial health.
