A Sesquicentennial Movie Under the Stars will be presented in Forest Park, Saturday, September 26, 2020 at dark (about 7:15). The movie will be shown on a big screen. Remember the Drive-In movies? Bring own seating and snacks. Practice social distancing and masks are an added safety precaution. Practice kindness and leave parking around the park for those with handicap permits. There will be no parking right behind stage. The committee responsible for this event is the AC Museum. The movie will be a SQC History Documentary from before the town railroad tracks started being laid on September 10, 1870 to current history and will last 41 minutes. Ellett Memorial Hospital is hosting a GIRLS DAY OUT on Sunday, October 4, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.at the Hospital. Please come join them for their 3rd Annual Breast Cancer Wellness & Awareness Day. Come receive your pre-registered annual mammogram by Diagnostic Imaging Center Mobile Coach and receive a special gift. There will be Breast Cancer speakers sharing their life stories, talking about genetics and facts of Breast Cancer. Door prizes awarded, fellowship, stories from survivors, caregivers and support will be shared. A light lunch served and treats to indulge. Vendors will be set up for your guilty pleasures and essential information available. Howard Hellwig, formerly of Butler, will be at the Pleasant Gap Christian Church on Sunday, September 27 during their worship service at 11:00 a.m. He will be speaking about the Fe India Mission, a Christian based school for children and the work taking place there. Each year, the school has made amazing growth, and they are sure you will be enlightened at how God is working in a country that is not generally friendly to Christian efforts. They welcome anyone to join them and stay afterwards for lunch.

There will be a benefit fish fry fundraiser Friday, September 25 from 4:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Fair Haven Park on Highway C, 8 miles north of Walker, near Harwood, MO. The menu includes fat fried fish and southern style hush puppies, baked beans, cole slaw and homemade bread and butter. Dessert includes freshly cranked ice cream and homemade pies baked by the community ladies. There will be lots of seating in their 40’ x 40’ tent. Your free will donation will go to Stoney Creek and Walnut Creek Schools.

The annual Fall Festival at Living Water Ranch, Osceola, is scheduled for October 3 from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The festival is free to attend and is open to the public. A full concession stand will be available, no outside food or drinks, please. Activities will include zipline, archery, Forgers for Christ forging station, Wild Edible samples (cricket cookies anyone?), giant slide, petting zoo, pony rides, hayride, BB guns with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputies, and other activities. Ellett Memorial PACE classes will begin again at the hospital on Monday, September 28, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. This program is a community–based, non-clinical group exercise program that is designed to help those who have joint and/or muscle problems achieve improved joint mobility, muscle strength and endurance in order to improve the performance of their daily activities.
The AC Public Library is conducting their Friends of the Best Sellers Program until September 24. The program's purpose is to fund the purchase of new hardback books for the library. You can become a Friend by either choosing a book from the list or requesting another book you've wanted to read and then donating $20.00 for said book. The perks of being a Friend to the Library are that you will be the first person to check the book out, you'll have the opportunity to read other books purchased by Friends first, and you will be honored by having your name placed on a special name plate in the front of each of the Library Friend books. A master gardener training has been scheduled beginning October 6, 2020 and concluding November 10, 2020. The mission of the Missouri Master Gardener Extension Program is “helping others learn to grow”. The Master Gardener program provides in-depth horticulture training to individuals throughout Missouri who then volunteer their time applying what they have learned to help others in their communities to learn about gardening and environmental education. This class will be a hybrid virtual training. Participants have the option of attending the class completely online, via Zoom, from the comfort of their home. The alternative is to attend the class live at one of the following locations: Boonville – Cooper County Extension Office, Sedalia – Pettis County Extension Office, Versailles – Morgan County Extension Office, Columbia – Boone County Extension Office and
Higginsville – Lafayette County Extension Office. There will be a limit of 10 participants at each of the live locations and social distancing/masking recommendations will be in place. At each of the 5 in-person locations there will be a moderator knowledgeable in horticulture to help facilitate and answer questions. At some point during the training each site will have a live speaker. During other weeks, the live speaker will be at one of the other locations and broadcast to the remaining sites. The class will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. beginning on October 6 and concluding on November 10. The cost for the training is $200. Each year, the Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center (HARC) and University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry (UMCA) host the family-friendly and educational Missouri Chestnut Roast event. This year is going to look a little bit different. Instead of offering an in-person event at the Research Center, located in New Franklin, Mo., HARC and UMCA will go virtual this year, along with the rest of the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) Agricultural Research Centers during the annual field day season. The HARC Virtual Chestnut Roast will be held Saturday, October 3, with numerous unique videos available through the Research Center’s website and Facebook page.
The videos will include informative content on the production of pecan, chestnut and elderberry, from start to finish. While you won’t be able to smell the aroma or taste the flavor of roasted chestnuts, you will be treated to new behind-the-scenes footage and video tours of HARC that will immerse you in a true Missouri agroforestry landscape. The event promises to be inspiring for audiences near and far. The Virtual Chestnut Roast will include a keynote video given by Curtis Stone, known as “The Urban Farmer” from Canada, who, according to his website, has an area of expertise in quick-growing, high-value annual vegetables for direct consumer market streams. Individuals can find the presentations beginning around 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 3, on the Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center Facebook page (facebook.com/mizzouharc/). Presentations will be posted throughout the morning. The videos will also be posted on a special webpage (harc.missouri.edu/chestnut-roast/) on the HARC website. Attendees are welcome to visit the Center for Agroforestry Facebook page (facebook.com/centerforagroforestry) and the Mizzou Agroforestry YouTube channel (youtube.com/channel/UCUOh8LRAf21gW2dt3uPf_UA) for the videos and additional resources as well.
MU Extension regional livestock and agriculture business specialists have put together a three-night online cattle management workshop series to educate cattle producers on various management and financial strategies for optimum performance of their cattle operation. Management is key to profitability in a cattle operation. The workshop series began September 22. The second night of the workshop series will be September 29 at 7:00 p. m. with a discussion on winter cow-calf operation feeding management. Topics covered will include: feeding cows and calves through the winter, weaning calf management including creep feeding and proper weaning time, cow body condition score management, identifying and culling cows to improve the herd and economics of the operation, economics of weaned calves and economics of raising versus purchasing replacement heifers. The final night of the workshop series will be October 6 at 7:00 p. m. with a discussion on winter stocker cattle operation feeding management. Topics covered will include: nutritional and grazing management for optimum gain, supplementation strategies including discussion of hay and grain-based supplements as well as additives, preconditioning and vaccination programs, use of implant to improve performance and economics of retaining calves after weaning or direct sale. The workshops are free to the public but registration is required to attend the workshops.
