A few minutes into the pursuit the driver of the vehicle lost control of his car causing it to leave the roadway and strike multiple trees along the fence row. This caused a tree to break off and fall across the road causing the deputy to take evasive action to avoid being struck by the tree.
The fleeing vehicle received extensive damage and came to rest upright on the side of the road. The vehicle was occupied by a male and female with both parties being trapped in the vehicle.
Adrian Fire Department and Bates County EMS arrived on scene and and used the jaws of life to extricate the two occupants. Both subjects were transported by Bates County EMS. After patient care was completed the Adrian Fire Department then began the quick work of cutting up the tree to clear the roadway.
“This morning I responded to the scene to assist the deputy and what I observed every citizen in Bates County should know.” Sheriff Anderson said. “I observed a team of professional first responders working together in the early hours of a holiday to potentially save lives. It didn’t matter that this was someone who was running from law enforcement, they didn’t care who they were or what caused it. They just saw another human who needed help and came together to make that difference. Some of these professionals weren’t getting paid to be there but they were there and they made a big difference. I ask that when you think of all the things you’re thankful for today, please include those front line first responders who will always be there and do their best for people they may not even know or see again.”
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Adrian Police Department, Adrian Fire Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Bates County EMS.
