Obituary - Stan Hilty

Stanfred (Stan) Leon Hilty was born December 11, 1935 near Clinton, Missouri to Wesley John Hilty and Hallie Arlene (Ross) Hilty. He had two sisters, Donna and Myrna, and one brother, Ross, who all preceded him in death.

Stan attended New Harmony grade school and one year of Clinton High School, after which demands of the family farm required him to start his work career.

At age 18 Stan enlisted in the United States Navy, hoping to be assigned to the Seabees, as an interest in construction was beginning to take root in him. Instead, he was assigned to the Destroyer USS Eversole, and was deployed in the Pacific near the end of the Korean War. Although he didn’t receive his first choice of assignment, Stan had great pride in his time on board, and a portrait of the “Eversole” hangs in his home office today.

Stan returned to Clinton after his service to continue work on the family farm. He married Lovella Smart in 1961, lived on the farm south of Clinton, until the farm was purchased by the United States Government as reservoir space for Truman Dam. Stan and Lovella purchased and moved with their two young sons to a cattle ranch, along Turkey Creek southeast of Warsaw. He decided to process gravel from the creek for the needs of the ranch, and then began to sell aggregates to the public. After purchasing a limestone mine, formed Hilty Quarries, Inc., with Lovella and his mother Hallie. As the business grew, the Company supplied aggregate material to local and state agencies, as well as the many road and bridge relocations associated with the construction of Truman Dam.

Business relationships established during projects at Truman Reservoir led to work on Wolf Creek Nuclear Power Plant in Kansas and Smithville Dam. By the early 1980’s the business had expanded into grading, bridge, paving and heavy construction, fulfilling his desire early in life to engage in that line of work. Stan’s strength was his ability to tirelessly pursue his vision.

Stan was active in industry organizations including, Missouri Limestone Producers Association as a past President and board member and on the Board of Directors of Associated General Contractors.

In 1990 Stan left his full time position with Hilty Quarries, Inc., to again engage in farming and ranching with his third son, agriculture being one of his lifelong interests. This also allowed him to spend time with his grandsons, which he dearly loved.

January 1, 2000 Stan married Myrna Nonaka, after losing Lovella to cancer in 1998. Stan and Myrna enjoyed many social activities with friends, and were often seen together on Wednesday and Friday evenings having dinner and swapping stories.

Stan was a member of the Board of Directors at United Missouri Bank, Board of Trustees for the Clinton United Methodist Church, Missouri Dam and Reservoir Safety Council, Clinton Elks Lodge, and Meyer Lake and Hunting and Fishing Club.

He had a lifelong passion for hunting and fishing, and enjoyed many trips with family and friends throughout North America. In particular, his love for waterfowl hunting led him to support Ducks Unlimited as a state council member and is a sponsor in perpetuity. He was also a multi-engine rated private pilot. He never met a stranger and his relationships with family, friends and those he worked with were his greatest treasure.

Stan passed away Thursday, January 26, 2023 at the Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park, Kansas at the age of 87.

In addition to his wife Myrna, surviving are three sons, John Hilty (Kelley), Shawn Hilty (Wendy), and Joe Hilty (Tricia); grandsons, Zach, Orren, Connor, Montana, Mason, Macray and Trenton; one granddaughter, Anna; step-children, Aaron (Michelle) and Angela Nonaka; step-grandchildren, Danielle, Tori, Brenna, Shawn and Brendan; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 2, 2023 at the Clinton United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., just prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the Englewood Cemetery. Stan will lie in state from noon to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Bradley & Hadley Funeral Home, Clinton. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Clinton United Methodist Church, and these donations may be left in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left online at www.bradleyhadley.com.

Clinton Man Sentenced to Thirteen Years in Prison

Roger L. Peek Jr., 24, of Clinton, Missouri has been sentenced to thirteen (13) years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for statutory sodomy of a child less than twelve years of age.

Prosecuting Attorney, LaChrisha Gray, filed charges in June 2019 based on an incident that occurred in May of that year in which Peek had been babysitting several children. On that occasion, Peek engaged in a sexual act with one of the children.

The case had been set for trial a number of times since 2019, but ultimately Peek entered a plea of guilty to statutory sodomy.

On January 17, 2023, a sentencing hearing was held before the Circuit Court, wherein the Court heard argument from both sides and sentenced the defendant to thirteen (13) years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

The law requires Peek to serve eighty-five percent (85%) of the sentence before being eligible for parole. Peek will have to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life. Peek will also be subject to a special form of supervision as a sex offender for his life.

Prosecuting Attorney LaChrisha Gray states, “No amount of years in prison will ever make up for the damage and trauma to the victim or the victim’s family. Protecting the victim from further anguish by being subjected to the demands of the justice system, but also ensuring that the victim and other children could continue through childhood while the defendant is in custody was of paramount importance.”

Archie Tournament Rundown by Cody Morris

It was a week jam-packed of local basketball as the Archie Whirlwinds hosted their annual basketball tournament for the 93rd consecutive year. The tournament saw 9 different area schools competing for the championship this year. Local teams competing included Butler, Drexel, Hume, Rich Hill, Adrian, Archie, Harrisonville, among others.

Notre Dame de Sion came into the girls side of the bracket as the top seed and was able to come out victorious against the 8 seed, Midway Vikings. Followed by Archie defeating Rich Hill, Harrisonville beating Butler, and the 6 seed Drexel Bobcats upsetting the Hume Hornets who came into the tournament with a 3 seed and having a great season thus far.

In the second round, on the winners half of the bracket, Notre Dame de Sion advanced to the Championship with a victory over Archie, and Harrisonville would squeak by Drexel for a chance at the trophy as well. The 3rd place game saw the Drexel Bobcats defeat the Whirlwinds. On the opposite side of the bracket, the Hume Hornets defeated the Rich Hill Tigers to claim the 5th place hardware, while Midway defeated Butler to take home the 7th place title.

All of that action set the scene for Championship Saturday where the Notre Dame de Sion Storm prepared to face-off against the Harrisonville Wildcats. This was a highly anticipated 1-2 match-up that did not disappoint. After 8 minutes of play, Notre Dame led the Wildcats 15-11. The Wildcats would outscore the Storm in the 2nd quarter and go into the break trailing by only 2 with 27-25 showing on the scoreboard. Notre Dame however, would come out and double up the Wildcats during an explosive 3rd quarter which led to Harrisonville trailing by 10 going into the final quarter. This deficit proved too much for the Wildcats to handle, and the Storm would wrap up the tournament with a 63-47 victory and take home the title of Champions. Harrisonville’s Madison Riggs would put a valiant effort in the loss and end the game with 21 points and 6 rebounds on 7-13 shooting from the floor. But Grace Carlson of the Storm was just too much for the Wildcats to handle as she ended the game with 30 points, 7 steals, and 4 rebounds on 9-14 shooting from the field and 11-12 from the charity stripe.

The All-Tournament team for the Ladies was compiled of the following: Junior Grace Carlson of Midway, Senior Kendra Riggs of Harrisonville, Senior Madison Johnson from Harrisonville, Junior Brecklen Morrison of Hume, Senior Keara Mattingley from Archie, and Senior Emily Wheeler of Drexel.

The first round of the men’s action, saw the #1 seed, Harrisonville Wildcats handle the #8 seed Hume Hornets, followed by a couple of upsets in the middle of the bracket as the 5 seed Adrian Blackhawks defeated the 4 seed Rich Hill Tigers, and the 6 seed Drexel Bobcats took down the 3 seed Butler Bears. The 2 seed Archie Whirlwinds took care of business against the Midway Vikings to complete the first round of play.

On the consolation side of things, Butler would end up winning against the Rich Hill Tigers to finish in 5th place, while the Midway Vikings would defeat Hume for the 7th spot. Adrian faced off against Drexel for the third place game, the Blackhawks were able to come out on top of a very talented Drexel team to take home the 3rd place trophy.

The final game of the tournament saw the 1 seed Harrisonville Wildcats take on the 2 seed Archie Whirlwinds for a chance to hoist the trophy. After a tightly contested opening quarter, the Whirlwinds would cling to a one point advantage with a score of 14-13. At the intermission the Whirlwinds would continue to get the better of the match up, leading 28-22. However, the Wildcats would make the proper adjustments in the locker room and come out and cut into the lead outscoring Archie 12-7 in the 3rd and making it a 35-34 game going into the 4th. It was a tale of two halves, as the Wildcats would continue their run in the 4th and outscore the Whirlwinds 18-10 in the final period to claim a 52-45 win and emerge Champions as the final buzzer sounded. Briar McIntire of Archie would lead all scoring in the Whirlwinds losing effort, tallying up 18 points, while Eli Baker of the Wildcats led Harrisonville with 16 points, helped out by Alex Bullcok with 15 points and Mason Mitchell with 12 points.

To wrap up the night, a couple of awards were given out, as the Rich Hill Tigers were handed the Bob Bure Sportsmanship Award and the Men’s All-Tournament was announced, and the following players made the cut: Senior Alex Bullock of Harrisonville, Sophomore Eli Baker of Harrisonville, Senior Jojo Mitchell of Drexel, Junior Colin Kramer of Adrian, Junior Briar McIntire of Archie, and Senior Brunson Tenholder of Archie. Editors addition to this list include: Senior Magal Chol-Case of Rich Hill who compiled a double against Butler scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the Tigers loss to Butler, as well as a couple of other impressive games throughout the tournament. Junior Carter Trumbore of Butler who averaged 25.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2.3 assists for the tournament.

In other area sports, Senior Brendin Patrick broke the Butler wrestling win record with his 161st win in only 165 matches.

What's Up by LeRoy Cook

Who's at fault?

The Fliars Club launched into blustery skies last Saturday morning, finding a sparse crowd on the ramp at Paola’s Miami County airport. The winds were kicking up to 25 knots, discouraging a lot of participants with rough air below 4000 feet.

‘Twas an interesting week, weatherwise. There was fog some mornings, low clouds might be encountered for a few miles, then clear, warm weather blew in as the weekend started, then switched  around to an Arctic blast to start the new week. Be prepared for anything this time of year.

Transient traffic included an Army Guard UH60 Black Hawk helicopter, two visits by Piper Archer trainers, a Cessna Centurion and a Cessna Skyhawk. Local flyers were Jeremie Platt in his Grumman Tiger, Jon Laughlin in his Piper Cherokee 180C and me logging night landings in a Cessna 150.

The controversy over the crashes of new Boeing 737 Max airliners won’t go away. The investigators looking into the Ethiopian Airlines accident of two years ago have concluded that the airplane’s angle of attack sensors “iced up” and exonerated the crew, but the in-country s accident board is being challenged by Boeing and our own NTSB, since it happened on a clear warm day and instrumentation wasn’t an issue. Many times foreign agencies have to favor their countrymen’s interests over the facts.

A sad case of a ramp worker at an airline being pulled into an idling jet engine made the news last week. She had been warned numerous times to wait for shutdown, signaled by the anticollision light going off, before approaching the parked aircraft, but was too eager and got killed. Working around running aircraft is dangerous and requires serious safety measures.

More flight hazards reported last week: A Cessna Skyhawk hit a drone on approach in Toronto, being flown without authorization by the local police. Fortunately, it bounced off the cowling this time and the ‘Hawk landed okay. And a Long Beach man was arrested after a year of amusing himself by shining a laser pointer at airliners going in and out of the nearby airport. Such stunts can blind a pilot at just the wrong time.

Our weekly brainteaser wanted to know the significance of the tick marks along lines of latitude on a sectional chart, showing each 1/60th of a degree. Each minute of latitude equals one nautical mile, about 6080 feet in length.  For next time, who does the Charles Taylor Award for long-time airplane mechanics honor in history? Hint: look up the Wright Brothers. You can send your answers to kochhaus1@gmail.com.

Cass County Deputy Benezette Receives Life Saving Award

Congratulations are in order for Cass County Deputy Benezette who has recently received the Life Saving Award from the Cass County Sheriffs Office Sheriff’s Office. On Saturday, October 29, 2022 at approximately 1040 hours, Dispatch broadcasted that they received a report of a rollover motor vehicle accident in the area of State Route D and East 203rd Street in rural Belton, Missouri. Dispatch also broadcasted that the reporting party stated that water was coming into the vehicle and the occupants were still inside the vehicle.

Deputy J. Benezette #613 was on his way home from conducting an extra duty assignment at the Sheriff's Office and heard dispatch broadcast the call for service. Deputy Benezette informed dispatch that he was the closest unit to the scene and informed dispatch that he would be responding.

Upon Deputy Benezette's arrival at approximately 1042 hours, he found that the motor vehicle accident was involving two vehicles. Deputy Benezette observed that one of the vehicles involved, a silver Ford truck, was overturned in the ditch on the northeast corner of the intersection at State Route D and East 203rd Street. Deputy Benezette found the occupants of the vehicle, David P. Miller and Desiree J. Miller were trapped inside the vehicle.

Deputy Benezette discovered that Mrs. Miller was buckled in her seat, unable to get the seatbelt unbuckled and struggling to keep her head out of the water that was coming into the cab of the vehicle.

Deputy Benezette was able to cut Mrs. Miller out of her seatbelt and safely got her out of the vehicle as well. Due to Deputy Benezette's quick actions he was able to get both Mr. Miller and Mrs. Miller out of the vehicle and prevented Mrs. Miller from possibly drowning before EMS (Emergency Medical Services) arrived on scene several minutes later.

Deputy Benezette's actions show his dedication to duty under the most extreme circumstances, were in keeping with the Sheriff's Office mission statement and reflect distinct credit upon himself, as well as the Cass County Sheriff's Office.
