Makayla wrestles for the Butler Bears. She was nominated by her head coach Andrew Dixon. Coach Dixon said, "Makayla Mallatt is a senior with a 4.118 GPA. She is in honor society and Co-Captain of the girls wrestling team.
Makayla received Academic All-State her Sophomore year. Her Junior year she was out to due to an injury. Makayla won the 2nd Annual Butler Girls Invitational on January 6th. She is the current record holder for multiple school records. These include the fastest pin, most wins in a season, most wins in a career, most pins in a season, most career pins, most season takedowns, and most career takedowns. She is currently ranked the #1 girl at 110 in Class 1.
Makayla is one of the hardest working wrestlers that I have ever coached. She is very intelligent, and always has a positive attitude. She will take the time to help her fellow teammates if they are struggling learning a move. Her integrity is what I like most about her. She never shortcuts anything and is always looking for tougher opposition.
She has a strong expectation in herself to succeed not only in wrestling, but her school work as well." As wrestling is growing for female athletes we asked Makayla if she had any advise for young kids wanting to start a career in sports. She stated, “just get out of your comfort zone. Push your limits, you can do more than what you think you can.” We asked her to state what it takes to be an elite athlete.
She replied with, "dedication, you have to be able to put your entire heart into it. You need to be willing to push through the tough times." We then asked her what she thought was the toughest aspect of sports. She explained to us, "it is the balance between academics, social life, and athletics.
You have to be able to devote a certain amount of time to each one of these things. You need the balance so you don't overwhelm yourself.
Finally, we asked Makayla if she had anything she wanted to accomplish before the season was over. She said, "I really want to win state this year."
After graduation Makayla would like to go to college and possibly wrestle. She is still undecided on a school and is potently looking at a degree in radiology. We wish Makayla the best of luck competing in districts next weekend!
