MDC says slow down and give turtles a brake!
Watch out for turtles crossing roads this spring as they look for food and a mate.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages drivers to be cautious on the roads this spring and give turtles a brake! These reptiles are often hit by cars during the warmer months, but are at special risk this time of year because they are more active.
Common turtles spotted crossing Missouri roads include three-toed box turtles, ornate box turtles, and snapping turtles.
Turtles emerge from their burrows and begin the hunt for food and mates during warm and wet conditions, which can lead them to cross roadways, oftentimes resulting in their death. Thousands of box turtles are killed every year by vehicles.
Young males make up most of the travelers, sometimes wandering as many as six miles searching for territories and mates. Females are also crossing the roads in search of nesting areas.
Turtles are ectothermic, or cold-blooded, and depend on external sources of heat to determine their body temperatures. This is why people see them on warm asphalt during cool, spring days.
Vehicles are one of the leading threats box turtles face in Missouri, and MDC urges motorists to be cautious and slow down if they see a turtle in the road. If helping a turtle make it safely across, check for traffic and always move the turtle in the direction it is traveling.
Additionally, MDC urges the public to leave turtles in the wild. Taking a wild animal, whether a turtle or other wildlife species, and keeping it as a pet normally ends in a slow death. Leave turtles in the wild, follow the speed limit, and keep your eyes on the road.
For more information on Missouri’s turtles, visit the MDC online Field Guide at https://nature.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/search/turtle.

Lady Bears Battle the Hume Hornets
Lady Bears Battle the Hume Hornets
By Cody Morris
On Thursday the 5-12 Lady Bears played host to the Hume Hornets. The Hornets traveled to Butler with a 9-1 record, losing their first matchup of the season to Lockwood with a score of 12-13, and then rattling off 9 wins in a row.
As action began, Taylor Hudson stepped into the circle for the Bears. Hudson, only a freshman, faced 4 Hornets in the first, allowing 0 hits and grabbing 1 strikeout. The Bears half of the inning would go just as quickly, as they would only send out 3, all of who would make contact, but fail to reach a bag.
In the second, Crawford would grab a lead off single for the Hornets. After allowing the first hit of the night, Hudson would strike out the next two batters. With two outs, and a runner on, Shyer stepped to the plate and cranked out an RBI triple. During the next at-bat, Shyer would test Zoey Fritts behind the plate, and was caught in a throw-out by Fritts to retire the inning.

Karl Oskar Blaser Memorial Scholarship Awarded:
The Karl Oskar Blaser memorial scholarship was established in 2022 to honor the memory of Karl O. Blaser, who, in June 2018, was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident while on his way home from work.
It was very important to Karl that High School students that wanted to pursue a trade were encouraged to do so and had access to resources to help students pursue their chosen career.
The Karl Oskar Blaser scholarship is awarded to one or more deserving High School senior that will be attending a trade school or will be beginning a skilled trade after graduation. This year, our family has chosen two well deserving students that will each receive a one-time scholarship in the amount of $750.
This year's recipients are Rains Craft & Keyarah Shobe. Rains graduated in December from Butler High School and has already begun training at Iron Eagle Welding Academy in Stockton, MO.
Keyarah is graduating in May from Butler High School and will be attending Welding school after graduation. Congratulations, Rains and Keyarah.

During the early morning of 04-26-2023, Lamar Police Officers responded to a call near the intersection of 9th and Broadway after dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a woman screaming for help.
One of the callers reported that it sounded like a man was chasing a woman. When the officers arrived, they located a vehicle with the engine running and the driver’s side door was open.
The vehicle had struck a residence near the intersection. The officers immediately began searching for the registered owner of the vehicle. Their investigation revealed that Matthew F. Clements, 30, of Lamar Mo. had been following a woman that he had previously been in a relationship with.
Near the intersection of 9th and Broadway, he blocked her vehicle with his; forcibly removed her from the vehicle and placed her in his vehicle, without her consent.
The woman’s vehicle was still in drive, which caused it to travel through the intersection and collide with a house after she was removed. Clements then transported the woman to a residence where he placed her in a garden shed.
During this time, he threatened her, telling her he would not hurt her if she wouldn’t try to leave. After a length of time, he released the woman. The woman did receive minor injuries from this incident.
Matthew Clements was arrested by the Lamar Police Department and a charge of Kidnapping has been filed by the Barton County Prosecutor’s Office. Matthew F. Clements is currently being held in the Barton County Jail on a no bond warrant.
