12 year old boy involved in police pursuit in Bates County

On 4/19/23 at approximately 8pm Bates County Sheriff’s Office was advised by the RP that his son had stolen his truck and was headed to Butler. In the area of CC Hwy and F Hwy the deputies intercepted the vehicle.

The deputies initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver continued east bound on F Hwy. Approximately 1 mile west of Passaic the deputy deployed the Grappler System and brought the vehicle to a stop.

A 12 year old male was taken into custody where he was later turned over to the Juvenile Office. The juvenile was then transported to a juvenile detention center.

The parents, Children’s Division, Juvenile Office and the Sheriffs Office are working together to change the behavior of this juvenile.

“This is a great example of why we invested in the Grapple System. An inexperienced juvenile driver refusing to stop could have ended completely different. The decision to deploy the Grapple System prior to this pursuit reaching a more populated area or before speeds reached a catastrophic speed for a juvenile to handle was the right call.” Says Sheriff Anderson. “We are committed to serving our community and doing our best to reduce the risk to our citizens.

Having these kinds of resources help in our commitment and helps produce more positive outcomes for all involved. We will now turn our attention and become a resource to the parents of this juvenile. We are also committed to investing in our youth because they are the future of our community”
