Roberta was born to Harvey and Rose Ella (Anderson) Prough on Dec. 13, 1923, in Schell City, MO. She grew up helping on the farm and helping to raise her siblings. On July 14, 1945, she married Jim Kershner. The couple lived several years near Amsterdam, MO, before eventually settling in Adrian. Roberta then went to work for Bendix Corp. of Kansas City, MO. She worked there for 31 years before retiring.
Roberta was a member of the Crescent Hill Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of Rebekah organizations. She deeply enjoyed both organizations and cherished the relationships she developed in service to those groups. She enjoyed visiting with family and hearing stories of the wild adventures of her sons growing up. Roberta loved reading, working on word search puzzles, and spending many hours making embroidery gifts. In fact, she was working on a new project up until she entered the hospital.
Roberta's passion was supporting her family. She was always in attendance for home football and softball games, and could be counted on to attend any school function. She looked forward to visits by the great-grandchildren to watch them play and roughhouse. Roberta never forgot a holiday or a birthday; you could always look forward to receiving a card in the mail. She loved Christmas and seeing the joy of her family as they opened their gifts. She created a tradition where the grandkids would wear Christmas hats and gather around her on the couch for a picture before opening presents. More than 20 years later, this tradition continues with the new generation.
Roberta is preceded in death by siblings: Doris Dean, Velda Rose (Prough) Rahn, Cecil Prough, Evelyn "Sissy" Prough, Dorothy (Prough) Stice, and Roy Prough; her husband, Jim Kershner; and son, Johnnie Kershner. Roberta is survived by her brother, Everett, and wife, Patricia Prough; son, Jimmie, and wife, Raelynn Kershner; daughter-in-law, Denise Kershner; grandchildren: Justin and wife, Belinda Kershner; Brad Kershner and wife, Elizabeth Marvel; and Kelsi Kershner; and great-grandchildren: Jackson, Jamison, and John Kershner.
Roberta was a shining example of what a person should strive to be - always selfless and willing to help others, always kind and caring, yet silently tough and resilient. The last advice she gave was: "Live by the Golden Rule." Everyone who knew Roberta was better for it. She will be missed but fondly remembered.
