Officer assaulted at Harrisonville Prom

PRESS RELEASE: (Harrisonville, MO) - On April 29, 2023, at approximately 9:16 p.m., the Harrisonville Police Department responded to an assault in progress at 210 South Independence Street.

Upon arrival, officers arrested a juvenile suspect following reports of an assault of a Harrisonville Police Officer during Harrisonville High School’s Prom dance.

The juvenile suspect attempted to enter the dance earlier in the evening with a backpack, which was against dance rules.

Harrisonville High School staff volunteered to hold the bag at the entrance to the venue.

The juvenile later retrieved a ski mask out of the backpack and attempted to put it on. A Harrisonville Police Officer, identified as Scott Ramsey, saw the juvenile with the ski mask on and asked that it be taken off.

The juvenile became disruptive and argumentative, refusing to give up the mask. After the juvenile refused to comply, Officer Ramsey attempted to escort the juvenile outside of the dance to discuss it further. Once outside, the juvenile began to physically assault Officer Ramsey, repeatedly striking him in the face. The juvenile suspect also assaulted a member of the Harrisonville School District staff.

Officer Ramsey was transported by ambulance to Cass Regional Medical Center, where he was kept overnight for treatment and evaluation. Thankfully, Officer Ramsey has been released from the hospital and is recovering from the many injuries sustained during the assault.

The juvenile suspect is being held through the Cass County Juvenile Office, with charges pending. The department is unable to answer questions about the suspect, as it involves a juvenile and is still an open investigation.
