Council opens checkbook for necessary repairs, updates

It was a fairly uneventful session for the Butler city council on June 20th with one scheduled guest, a representative of the Bates County Fair board who was a no-show however the council went ahead and approved permission for the Fair to have a parade on July 11th, 5 pm.

As two council members were not available for the meeting, Marlene Wainscott and Doncella Liggins, any discussion regarding the proposed RV park has been tabled until the July 18th meeting (no meeting on July 4th).

A representative of the Allgeier Martin engineering firm revealed bids to replace the roof on the fire station which sparked a lengthy discussion about putting so much money into an old building. Councilman Jeff Hall brought up the fact that a new building could be built for as little as $500k or so but as the conversation ensued it was evident by the time the existing structure was demoed, replacement cost would be much more than $500k. Hence, Hall was the only no vote as the council approved low bid of $666,296.00 from Redhammer Roof Group to go ahead and do the work.

Other approved expenditures were $7,331.20 for rubber playground surface; picnic tables for park(s) $5,796.00; water heater replacement for pool $12,850.00; benches for pool $6,249.75; diving  board $5,339.00; fire hydrant replacement(s) $25,014.82 and electric cable to repair electric primary in Swaidner’s Addition $23,950.00.
