The Miami County Kansas recorder of deeds has confirmed that some 20 acres of land has been purchased near 359th Street and Cold Water Springs Road by the Astronomical Society of Kansas City for the relocation of the Powell observatory now located Northwest of Louisburg.
The move primarily is for more space (pun intended) and because of ‘light pollution’; the new location would serve much better. The new observatory would include seating for 100, two telescopes and an observation deck for those with private telescopes. It has not yet been announced when construction of the new facility might begin.
The move is not without opposition however, some local residents have voiced concerns regarding increased traffic and other problems. Unless some formal action is taken, it appears the project will remain on track as planned.
