Charles was born October 23, 1937, in Adrian, Missouri, to John and Katherine (McKissick) Portwood. He graduated from California High School, California, Missouri. Charles enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1962 and retired in 1983. After retiring from the Marine Corp, he worked as a Bates County Deputy for 18 years.
Charles married Arlene Minks of Deepwater, Missouri, in Miami, Oklahoma, on June 23, 2000. He belonged to Warsaw Leathernecks Detachment 1254. Charles was a proud veteran of both military and law enforcement that he had served. He was a loving and giving man to his family.
Charles is survived by his daughter, Linda Orfield, Clinton, MO., sons, David (Rebecca) Minks, Warsaw, MO., Stacy (Pamelia) Minks, Rich Hill, MO., Sam (Andrea) Portwood, Niles, MI., Chuck Portwood, Niles, MI.; grandchildren, Christine (Cory) Schmidt, Webb City, MO., Amy (Dennis) Setzer, Lake Tapawingo, MO., Micheal Hicks, Lexington, KY., Machelle Minks, Rayville, MO., John Charles, Aleah Minks, Warsaw, MO., Kayleigh (Matt) Mayo, Appleton City, MO., Brennan (Christie) Minks, Warrensburg, MO., Conner Minks, Clinton, MO., Brooke Portwood, Niles, MI., Britney Portwood, Niles, MI.; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon Duggan, Deepwater, MO., as well as several other family and friends.
He was preceded by his parents, John and Katherine Portwood; wife, Arlene Portwood; brothers, Harold Portwood, John D. Portwood, Jim Portwood, sisters, Virginia and Mary; son in law Gary Orfield; granddaughter, Erin Katie Minks.
