Public Service Announcement
The Butler Country Club had some damage to #9 green yesterday. Had 2 big chunks taking out of the green and 2 big divots on the fringe. It appeared a club was used. If anyone saw anyone out there yesterday after 5:30 please let me know.
Any members that take a guest or have family members that play by themselves please encourage them to take care of our course.
It appears they take a club and tried to just hit the ball towards their cart when they are done and take a big chunk out of the green.

MSHP: Include Safety In Your Plans For Labor Day Weekend
The movement of the boat, vibration and noise from the boat’s motor, sun, and wind are all boating stressors and enhance the effect of alcohol on your body. If alcohol is part of your water activities, drink responsibly, and never operate a vessel if you’ve consumed alcohol.
The 2023 counting period for the Labor Day holiday will be from 6 p.m., Friday, September 1, 2023, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 4, 2023.
The Labor Day holiday is a busy boating weekend. Before you take your boat on the water, inspect fuel lines and hose connections for leaks, and test the battery to confirm it is charged. When refueling, turn off any electrical devices which could create a spark. After refueling, open the engine compartment to visually inspect and smell for fuel leaks. Activate the blower system for at least four minutes before restarting the vessel.
In 2022, there were eight boating crashes which included one fatality and five injuries. One person drowned over last year's Labor Day holiday. Troopers arrested five people for boating while intoxicated during last year's counting period.
Marine enforcement troopers will be working to make our waterways safer during the holiday weekend. Missouri’s boaters are asked to do their part by remaining alert for other boats and swimmers and being courteous on the water. Smaller vessels should yield right-of-way to larger vessels. Boaters should avoid overloading their boat with too many passengers and always pay close attention to the boats around them.
Causing harm to another person or their property with an excessive boat wake may subject you to enforcement action or civil liability. Treat other boaters and property owners as you want to be treated. Be courteous and follow all of Missouri’s boating laws. Remember: Life jackets save lives. Wear one when you are on or around water.
If you'll be on the road this Labor Day holiday, make sure your vehicle is in good working condition before you depart. Drive courteously and obey all of Missouri's traffic laws. Remember to buckle up and pay attention as you travel.
Help ensure a safer Labor Day weekend for everyone.
In Missouri, seven people died and 398 were injured in 1,041 traffic crashes over the 2022 Labor Day holiday. This means one person was killed or injured every 11.5 minutes. Troopers arrested 121 people for driving while intoxicated during last year’s holiday weekend.
The Highway Patrol will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Crash Awareness & Reduction Effort) over the Labor Day holiday weekend. Speed, inattention, and impaired driving are leading causes of traffic crashes. All available troopers will be patrolling Missouri’s roadways and waterways. Troopers on the roadways will be enforcing Missouri’s speed limit, seat belt, and impaired driving laws, in addition to being available to assist motorists.
The public is encouraged to call the Patrol's Emergency Report Line (800) 525-5555 or *55 on your cellular phone if they witness criminal activity or experience an emergency. These emergency numbers are operational for both highway and water emergencies. If your celebration includes alcohol, designate someone else to drive whether you are in your boat or your car. Please don't become a statistic.
Too many people die in traffic crashes each year in Missouri. The choices you make when you’re behind the wheel matter. Make good choices, so you’ll never have to say, “If I could just go back …”

Important notice regarding social media
In our ever changing world we yet again face issues regarding the use of social media. In the past 24 hours, Facebook has elected to NOT let us post obituaries citing that they violate their terms of use somehow.
This move by Facebook along with others that include posting of accidents and police activity also sometimes violate their terms of service means that you won't always see all Mid America Live news on their platform.
We are working to post to other social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and others; however we recommend making a bookmark or shortcut on your mobile device so you can always go directly to www.MidAmericaLive.com for ALL the latest local news.
We apologize for any inconvenience however this particular issue is beyond our control.

From the Peculiar Police Department
On the evening of August 9, our officers responded to a disturbance at the Peculiar Farmer's Market, during which a man was reported to have pointed a gun at another man. A complete and exhaustive investigation was conducted, which included obtaining what little video footage was present in the area and obtaining statements from all persons who were present.
Since the original allegation was made very publicly on social media, we feel it is our duty to respond publicly at this point. We have received numerous questions and comments about the matter, but to maintain the integrity of the case, we did not want to release any information without having facts. The investigation concluded today, and there is no evidence to support the initial allegation.
To be very clear: This does NOT suggest that any of the parties involved were being untruthful. The evidence available just does not support the allegation of a crime occurring. The Peculiar Police Department is committed to the safety and well-being of our citizens and visitors, and we take this kind of report very seriously.
At the request of the reporting party, the case will be sent to the Cass County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review, as a matter of “second opinion.” If their review and/or findings differ from ours, we will certainly release that information as well.

Obituary - James Ross Kelso
Beloved teacher, musician, father, and friend, James Ross Kelso, 73, died peacefully at home in Belton, Mo., on August 15, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
James was born on July 5, 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to J D “Jack” and Helen Patton “Pat” Kelso. It was in his father’s plumbing shop that James learned the value of a strong work ethic and a good joke– two things he applied generously wherever he went. But it was his deep love of music that set his own life course.
James “Buster” Kelso played his first tenor sax gig in junior high, and knew from that young age that music was his calling. After graduating from Will Rogers High School, he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Tulsa on a full music scholarship, making lifelong memories and friends in bands such as Home Cookin’, Soul Section, and the TU Jazz Band.
As a music educator, James’s influence is still deeply felt in the Four-State area. After starting his teaching career in Eunice, New Mexico, James arrived in Neosho, Mo., in 1978, and spent the next 28 years inspiring generations of students to become both good musicians and good citizens, and developing Neosho’s jazz, concert, and marching bands into programs of distinction. He directed “The Pride of the Ozarks” Wildcat Marching Band, received numerous awards for his contributions to jazz education, and continued teaching in Chanute, Ks., until his full retirement in 2016.
To his students, Mr. Kelso was a remarkable leader and mentor who instilled in them not only a love of music but a sense of community, pride, and purpose. And to all people, he was an encourager and friend, offering anyone he met a kind word or a funny story with a twinkle in his eye. In his memory, he would hope that we all seek out the joy, beauty, and music in the world around us, and the deep humanity in each other.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Pat Kelso, and his sister, Sarajane Platten. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Berry, of Belton, Mo.; four beloved sons, Patrick Spencer Kelso (Caylene) of Oronogo, Mo., Gavin Ross Kelso (Mia) of Bedford, Tx., Kai Asher Kelso of Joplin, Mo., and Quinn Berry Kelso of Belton, Mo.; a treasured grandson, Brennan Ross Kelso, and a brother, John D. Kelso.
A public memorial service will be held at the Neosho High School Performing Arts Center in Neosho, Mo., on September 30, 2023, at 1:14pm.
Arrangements: Cullen Funeral Home, Raymore, Missouri 816.322.5278
