He was born on November 7, 1949 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Mark George Stinner Sr and Eleanor Beatrice Schinkel Stinner. In 2006, James formed a relationship with D.J. McLaughlin. The two have been together ever since. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Mark Stinner.
James is survived by his wife, D.J., a daughter, Shelly Dimitrijevic, a grandson, Sebastiano Malvezzi, a sister, Terri Moore, and step children, Rene Hetzer, Kimberly Campbell, John Hogue, and Lucas Campbell, and six step grandchildren.
