Herrman’s Historical Happenings week of May 22

1858 Kansas ruffians enter Bates Co, chasing and robbing farmers until several locals gang up on them and put a stop to it.

1880 The front window of the Arcade Saloon is damaged, as well as the person thrown through it. Butler.

1901 A major fire levels the entire south side of main street in Amsterdam. Lost were a hotel, barber shop, restaurant, millinery shop and harness shop.

1928 Walnut township boasts having 9 railroad stops.

1931 Goodyear’s “Worlds Largest Tire” is on display at Cubbin Motor Company. It is 12 feet tall, 4 feet wide and weighs 2 tons. (Corner Hardware location).

1940 The population of Butler is 2,958.

1961 Butler newspaperman, C.A. Moore, Jr. is chosen president of the Butler Jaycee’s.

1972 The “Clean up, paint up and fix up” campaign begins in Butler. Spearheaded by  Mayor Maurice Solomon and City Superintendent Frank Fritts.

1978 Randy & Lisa Dixon have purchased the Cedar Inn restaurant in Rich Hill.
