Per the recent announcement of a proposed YMCA fitness center and gym to be located in south Butler, social media has come alive with questions regarding zoning for the location.As it turns out, no zoning action was needed on behalf of the council or planning commission as Article IV District Regulations 26-102, item (B) (7) indicate that R-1 (residential) zoning does allow for "Public parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, community centers, athletic fields and recreation building therein."The ordinance with additional detail can be viewed here https://ecode360.com/36163299#36163325
That said, Mid America Live has spoken with officials behind the idea and "there is a long way to go" before ground can be broken as it appears completion of the project will require substantial funding before any further action.
