The Museum Minute: Tragic fire takes life

Herrman’s Historical Happenings week of May 28

1895 The Rich Hill city council passes an ordinance outlawing the manufacture, sale, or use of cigarettes in town.

1909 As per a new law, the new numbering system of Bates Co rural schools is put into place. Previously schools were numbered within townships. Now they are numbered with #1 in the very Northeast corner of the county to #132, South of Hume in the Southwest corner.

1948 The Piatt Farm Equipment Co holds their grand opening featuring the Allis-Chalmers line of equipment. Butler.

1948 The foundation is laid for the American Legion building, in Rich Hill.

1951 Thieves enter the Citizens Bank of Amsterdam by prying open a door. No money was taken, but two guns are missing.

1952 The Butler Saddle Club is organized with Oscar Baker as President and Dewey Pyle as Vice President.

1972 Charles Phillips, apartment resident upstairs in the Seelinger building perishes as the building is destroyed by fire, Northeast corner of the Butler square.
