May is the prime time to harvest cool-season grasses like tall fescue, orchard grass and Kentucky bluegrass.
The longer you wait, the poorer quality of the hay. Once seeds develop grasses become tougher and less nutritious.
Cut at 3.5 to 4 inches. Cutting any shorter will stress the plant and allow weeds to encroach.
Ideally, hay should be stored off the ground or on a concrete slab and under cover to reduce dry matter loss by up to 30%.Cut smart, cut early and store right to get the most out of your hayfields this season!
