In our ongoing commitment to improving the safety and security of our community, the La Cygne Police Department is pleased to announce that we have successfully received two grants to FULLY FUND the installation of Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPRs) on our city streets.
The implementation of ALPRs in La Cygne will enhance our investigative recourses to help solve, prevent, and detect crimes, which otherwise leave our community victimized. Importantly, these efforts are 100% grant-funded, ensuring no financial burden on our local taxpayers.
We understand the importance of balancing public safety with privacy. As such, we are committed to ensuring this technology is used ethically and responsibly, in accordance with state and federal laws, and most importantly, with transparency to our residents.
ALPRs were considered after a thorough review of previous unsolved cases to identify what tools or technologies might have improved results or expedited the investigations. In many of these cases, traditional digital investigative methods such as cellular triangulation and geo-fencing produced limited or no actionable results. This is largely due to La Cygne’s rural and valley geography, which do not generate the volume of data needed for these technologies to be effective. ALPR technology, by contrast, offers a more reliable solution tailored to the unique needs of our community.
Thank you to First Option Bank, the Louis and Dolpha Baehr Foundation, and the Kid VanVlack Foundation14 for making this possible.
Thank you for your continued support as we work to make La Cygne a safer place for all. Should you have any questions or wish to learn more about this initiative, please do not hesitate to contact us directly.
