This morning, there was a large law enforcement presence on Ash Street involving the Nevada Police Department and the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities received a report of a hostage situation in which an individual was reported to have been shot inside a residence.
Additional personnel were requested, and a perimeter was established. During the investigation, law enforcement made contact with the residents after several attempts. It was ultimately determined that the residence was the victim of a “swatting” call.
Swatting is a form of criminal harassment that involves deceiving emergency services into sending a police or emergency response to another person’s residence under false pretenses.
There is no threat to the community, and the situation has been resolved. Detectives will continue investigating to identify the individual responsible and will submit findings to the prosecuting attorney for review.
