Happy Birthday Jim Platt

Osceola police make fentanyl bust

Within the last two weeks, the Osceola Police Department received information regarding fentanyl at a residence inside Osceola City Limits. Chief Shumaker conducted a knock and talk at the residence and located two baggies. One baggie field tested positive for cocaine and the other baggie field tested positive for fentanyl and heroin. The Mid Missouri Multi Jurisdictional Drug Task Force was asked and generously agreed to assist with the investigation.

The investigation came to an end when the suspect's vehicle was stopped inside Osceola City Limits by Chief Shumaker and Officer Kauffman. Chief French with the Fair Play Police Department also assisted with the traffic stop and had K9 Bek conduct an open-air sniff on the vehicle, which resulted in an alert for the odor of narcotics. A probable cause and consent search was conducted on the vehicle. During the search, Officers located several capsules loose in the vehicle. A substance from one of the capsules field-tested positive for fentanyl. A consent search of the residence was also conducted with findings of more fentanyl paraphernalia.

The capsules from the vehicle weighed approximately .13 grams. We at the Osceola Police Department understand that .13 grams does not seem like a lot but the potentially lethal dose for fentanyl is 2 milligrams. The .13 grams is approximately 130 milligrams, which could potentially be lethal for 65 people. Due to this investigation ongoing, we are unable to give out the name of the suspect at this time. A Felony Trafficking Drugs 2nd Degree charge will be sent to prosecuting attorney Daniel Dysart. According to DEA and CDC more than 107,000 people lost their lives to a drug overdose in 2023, with nearly 70 percent of those deaths attributed to opioids such as fentanyl, and 57,997 from September 2023 to August 2024.

Happy retirement Patti Wilson

After an impressive combined 44 years of dedicated service, we are excited to announce the retirement of Patti Wilson, LPN, from the Med-Surg Department at BCMH. Patti’s career at BCMH has spanned several decades, during which she touched the lives of countless patients and colleagues.

Patti started her journey with us in 1976, shortly after graduating high school, when she began working in Medical Records as a temporary summer employee. By August, she had transitioned to Patient Accounts, where she worked for over a decade until 1990. After a brief stint working for Dr. Moore and Dr. Gehm in Nevada, Patti made a significant career shift by enrolling in nursing school. In 1994, she earned her LPN degree and began her longstanding career in the Med-Surg Department, where she has continued to provide compassionate care on the inpatient floor.

Her decision to enter the field of nursing was inspired when she found herself unemployed.

"I thought, well I'm unemployed, what am I going to do now? And out of the clear blue sky," she said one thought popped into her mind, "I think I'm going to be an LPN -- where did that thought come from? I had never thought about nursing. But I do believe the good Lord brought me into it, and after that, nursing was a passion of mine."

That same year, Patti faced the heartbreaking loss of both her mother and grandmother. "It was a very difficult year. But God helped me through that, and I do believe that now 30 years later, He sustained me through all of this. Him and Suzi [French]", she said, referring to her now retired co-worker, who worked alongside Patti. "And now I'm expecting Him to lead me into the next chapter of my life."

Over the years, Patti has been a consistent presence in the department, known for her professionalism and kind demeanor. She has seen many changes in the field, but her commitment to patient care and her team has never wavered. Her dedication to the health and well-being of others has been an inspiration to all who worked with her.

On February 5, we celebrated Patti’s remarkable career with a retirement party held in the BCMH Dining Room, along with several of her family members. It was a wonderful occasion filled with laughter, memories, and well-wishes for her future adventures.

Patti will be greatly missed, but we are thrilled for her as she begins this exciting new chapter in her life. Patti is looking forward to spending more time traveling, enjoying dinner theater, gardening, reading, and working on projects in her “She-Shed.” Though she’ll be stepping away from her full-time role, she plans to stay connected with BCMH by one day soon returning to volunteer for the Auxiliary. Her love of social interaction with employees and patients will continue to shine through in her volunteer work. We look forward to seeing her bright smile greeting us once more at the Volunteer information desk.

From all of us at BCMH, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Patti on her well-deserved retirement!

For the record...

The Greene County Sheriff's office was recently called to investigate a report of what appeared to be a broken down cart with animals in the right of way.

Turns out, it was just someone caravanning their way to a new location and as noted by the Sheriff's office, this is a perfectly legal method of travel in Missouri as well as many other states.

As we also have horse and buggy travelers in our region, always be courteous and use caution when passing.

This One Simple Blood Test May Predict Heart Disease Risk

Ask about having these markers for heart disease risk checked at your next appointment.

What if you could predict your risk of future heart-related events such as heart attack and stroke simply by getting a blood test? Recent research suggests it may be easier than you think to determine heart disease risk, especially if you’re a woman.

The research used data from the Women’s Health Study over 30 years and found that measuring three markers in the blood was a good predictor of future cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Here’s what these three markers are and how they may play a role in assessing future heart disease risk:

  • High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) – This protein indicates inflammation in the body and was found to be the strongest predictor of future heart-related events like heart attack and stroke. The research showed that women with the highest levels of hsCRP had a 70% higher risk of a major cardiovascular event. To lower hsCRP naturally, exercise regularly and follow a healthy diet with a focus on plant-based foods. Medications may also help lower inflammation to reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
  • Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) – This is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. Women with the highest levels had a 36% greater risk of having a serious cardiovascular event. LDL-C is a well-known risk factor of heart disease and is included in current guidelines for assessing heart disease risk. Lifestyle habits such as exercise and eating a low-fat diet can help reduce levels. Statin medications can also help.
  • Lipoprotein(a) or LP(a) – Only about 10% to 20% of people have high levels of this type of fat in their bodies, but women with the highest levels had a 33% higher risk of a major heart-related event. You only need to have this marker checked once in your life because you either have high levels of this fat or you don’t. If you do, medications may help lower levels of LP(a).

Current guidelines from the American Heart Association rely on these factors to assess heart disease risk:

  • Cholesterol – including total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides
  • Blood pressure
  • Blood glucose
  • Body weight/BMI
  • Lifestyle habits such as exercise, diet and smoking
  • Family history of heart disease

LDL cholesterol is the only marker noted in the study that is part of the current guidelines for assessing heart disease risk. It’s easy to get information about the other two risk factors – hsCRP and LP(a) – from a simple blood test. However, you’ll likely have to ask for these markers to be checked, since doctors do not routinely do so. Knowing about all of these markers provides a more comprehensive picture of heart disease risk than evaluating one marker alone. This information should also be considered along with other factors affecting your heart health, including family history and lifestyle factors.

To better understand your future risk of a heart-related event such as a heart attack or stroke, ask your doctor about being tested for LDL-C, hsCRP and LP(a). There’s no need to wait until you’re a certain age or you have possible symptoms of heart disease to get tested. Lifestyle habits such as exercising regularly, following a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking help lower everyone’s risk. If your numbers are elevated, it becomes even more important to embrace these healthy habits as early as possible. Medication may also be needed to reduce some risk factors.

Higher utility bills a temporary issue

During the Tuesday night Butler city council meeting a discussion was held regarding a recent spike in utility bills as residents have expressed discontent regarding the uptick in prices.

Butler City Administrator Corey Snead explained to the those present that power is purchased based on a monthly estimate of usage and the January cold snap increased demand and now it's time to 'catch up' so to speak.

Snead wants to let everyone know that the cold snap happened at the same time as the estimate was paid, which likely will result in a higher/slightly higher bill again this month.

In the discussion it was noted that a spike in billing typically happens a couple times a year, during extremely cold and hot snaps as well.
