Karen attended school in Metz, Jefferson City, and New Haven, Missouri, graduating from Nevada High School in 1975. Karen met Terry at Calvary Baptist Church in August of 1973, and they were married on January 29, 1977, at Calvary Baptist Church. They were given eight children, and so far, 30 grandchildren, with two more on the way. Karen managed the Canteen at the Nevada State Hospital during the first couple of years after they were married. She quit after the birth of their first child and stayed home to raise her children until 2011 when she worked again for several years for the Nevada State Hospital in Nevada.
Karen, more than anything, especially liked being with her family and wanted them all to be happy. She wanted everyone else to enjoy themselves, often at her expense. She would do the work and wanted others to have a good time.

She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Leon Hyder.
