Lady Bears win first District game by wide margin
The Lady Bears softball team won their first district game 14-4 agains Summit Christian Academy. Tori Stauffacher pitched a great game giving up only 2 earned runs and striking out 8. She also had a great hitting night. She was 3 for 4 with an RBI and 3 runs. Jennifer McMurphy was 2 for 3 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs, and Abby McGrew was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a run.
Obituary - Rick Paluch
Memorial services for Rick Paluch will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, Missouri under the direction of the Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel (660-679-6555) in Butler, Missouri. There is no visitation. Contributions to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Richard Allen “Rick” Paluch, age 47 of Adrian, Missouri died Tuesday, October 11, 2011 in Adrian. He was born September 29, 1964 to Dale Norbert and Phyllis Ann Pommier Paluch in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Rick is survived by his parents, Dale and Phyllis Paluch of Kingsville, Missouri; a daughter, Jesse Paluch of Urich, Missouri; one brother, Robert Paluch of Abrams, Wisconsin; one sister, Tina Sheets and husband William of Grain Valley, Missouri; and his paternal grandmother, Stella Paluch of Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Your help needed in ongoing effort to mark Veteran graves
Salute to Civil War Veterans
For decades American Legion Post 153 and Auxiliary have decorated the graves of Veterans at Olathe Memorial Cemetery on Memorial Day. Each year the Post would receive calls from family and friends of graves that were missed. Many different groups have participated in research to identify all of the veterans’ graves. This has resulted in identifying the graves of close to 800 veterans of conflicts for the War of 1812 to the present.
This being the 150 anniversary of the Civil War we have concentrated in identifying the graves of Civil War Veterans that are not marked. We have been able to get VA stones for 10 previously unmarked graves and are working on identifying more. One of new stones is for William C. McElwain who was from Bates County but served in the 10th Kansas Volunteer Infantry. A dedication ceremony is planned for October 15th, 2011 at 5:00 pm at the Civil War Veterans Circle, Olathe Memorial Cemetery, 718 Chestnut St., Olathe Kansas. The main speaker will be Tom Rafiner, author of Caught Between Three Fires, a book about Cass County and General Order 11.
One of the problems identifying veterans is the fluid population of the border counties through the years. Especially during the Civil War, as the tide of war changed, the population changed. As we continue our efforts to identify all veterans’ graves in the cemetery we are asking anyone knowing of a veteran interred in Olathe Memorial Cemetery whose grave is not marked to notify us at olathevetsmemorial@prodigy.net with any information you may have.

City of Adrian under burn ban...
Adrian Fire Chief Gary Dizney has announced that any type of burning is prohibited within the city limits until further notice. He also urges those in rural areas to also wait to burn until we get some rain.
Likewise, Butler Fire Chief Jim Henry initiated a burn ban a few days ago.
The latest forecast shows only a slight chance of rain late Monday. We'll keep you posted.

Butler City Council meeting news
In Butler City Council news, Public Works Director Trent Diehl said the electric service for Walmart's new construction got finished...only to be damaged by a dirt contractor, who dug into it. Billing for repairs to the conduit, wire, pole brackets and the transformer is being sent to the contractor.
Meanwhile, other work is proceeding nicely, and the traffic signals have been installed at Highway 52 and Fran Avenue. No word yet on when the signals will be put into use.

Virginia area resident seriously injured last night
Just after 8 p.m. last night Duard A. Myers, 75, received serious injuries in a single car accident on route V near county road 2002 South of Virginia. The Southbound 2004 van he was driving apparently left the roadway and struck an embankment, trapping Myers in the vehicle.
He was transported by air ambulance to Research Hospital in Kansas City for treatment. Butler Fire/Rescue was assisted at the scene by the Bates County Sheriff's Department and Bates County EMS.
