Rain Barrel Construction Workshop June 2

Homeowners can learn how to build and install rain barrels to manage storm water at a workshop scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, June 2 at the Butler Utilities Storage Building, 710 W. Roberta St. (North of Butler fire station, behind Butler Detail Shop). Each participant will receive one 55-gallon barrel and all materials needed to assemble a rain barrel. The one-hour workshop will provide hands-on training to demonstrate how rain barrels are assembled and installed.

Space for the workshop is limited, so those interested should register immediately with Osage Valley RC&D by calling 660-679-4332 or emailing moneill@osagevalleyrcd.com. To learn more about the Mound Branch project and how to redirect polluted rainwater on your property, visit www.osagevalleyrcd.com.

The City of Butler is partnering with Osage Valley Resource Conservation and Development Council to conduct this workshop. It is part of the City’s effort to support the Mound Branch Evaluation and Restoration Project, which works with local residents to improve water quality in the Butler area by installing practices to reduce nonpoint source pollution and protect and improve water quality.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7, through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has provided partial funding for the Mound Branch project under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act.

Osage Valley RC&D is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization dedicated to the sustainable and responsible use of available resources to enhance the quality of life in West Central Missouri.

Please note! While anyone may come to the workshop to learn how to make a rain barrel, only residents of Butler will be able to receive a rain barrel. Please call 660-679-4332 if you have questions.

The Legislature Adjourns

From the desk of Senator David Pearce

On the evening of Friday, May 18, the gavel fell in the Missouri Senate, adjourning the body, and my colleagues and I left the Senate Chamber until veto session in mid-September, unless called upon by the governor to meet at another time.

We began this session with a number of goals that would benefit Missourians, such as passing a balanced budget without increasing taxes and making Missouri a more business-friendly state. While not every bill made it through the process to become law, we were successful in these two main goals. One day ahead of schedule, the General Assembly approved the budget and delivered it to the governor’s desk. We also passed legislation streamlining workers’ compensation laws to restore protections from lawsuits to co-workers for honest workplace accidents.
